Hi all and Happy New Year.
We are taking a trip to the eastern states in July and would like some recommendations on things to see and places to stay. We will be in Raleigh North Carolina in late July then heading north to Niagara Falls. We have never been out there and looking at maps and on the internet just is overwhelming. I know that a lot of you live out there and could give us the best advice on what to see and best places to stay. I do know that you need to make reservations in most campgrounds. So points of interest an campgrounds from Raleigh to Niagara Falls would be greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to warmer weather..

Thanks
Ron

The Finger Lakes area south of Rochester, NY is quite nice in the summer. Several wineries and craft beer places to visit if that's your thing. I've enjoyed staying at Watkins Glens State Park several years back although in a popup, it has some great hiking and cool scenery.  Also Letchworth State Park (https://www.letchworthpark.com/) has a really awesome gorge, great hiking and water falls. Its a beautiful park. Enjoy

Jordan Lake has one of our favorite campgrounds. It is very near Raleigh. Look for Popular Point Campground. Site C037 is right on the water. We camp there at least twice per year.

Very tough question depending upon your interests.  We did a New York loop through Niagara Falls last summer.  We like museums, history, so for campgrounds we just picked the ones closest to our destinations.  Some of the places we hit were the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Lucille Ball Museum (and also visited the house she was born, lived in and cemetery) in Jamestown NY. Curtis Museum in Hammondsport (he should get credit for the first flight not the Wright Brothers!!!) Kodak Museum in Rochester.  And hunting for diamonds in Herkimer (their "diamonds" are in the Smithsonian) is a blast.  If you can borrow a copy of RVing for Dummies from your library there is a section on traveling through western NY with many more tips.  Also on the way north a great stop is Scranton PA.  there is the national railroad museum and at another site you can take a real coal train down to a closed coal mine.  Then there is a Houdini museum with a show if you are a fan of magic.  New York side of Niagara Falls is more park like.  If you have a passport you can walk across the bridge to the Canada side which has more of the tourist sites (Ripley's Believe it or Not, Guinness Book of Records etc etc).  Although we have done this trip numerous times, this recent visit with an RV was clearly the best way to travel. I recommend using Roadtrippers to plan your trip.  They can point out interesting places to stop along your route.  We found many oddball places using that website.  We like the seeing strange things that are off the beaten track.  The only way to survive getting through this cold winter is sitting in front of the computer planning our trips next summer.  Cannot wait.  Good luck on your trip to through the North East

Ron...so really...whattya want to do? Raleigh to Buffalo is a day trip for us. Seriously. Literally thousands of places to see and camp. Are you going straight up 95=>70=>99? Or do you have time? The best state parks along the route are in the Carolina's. Pennsylania, second and NY third. Fishing and BBQ best in Carolina's. Best crab cakes in Maryland, best cheese steak subs in Pennsylvania and best egg rolls in west New York (guessing, cuz I don't know).

Thanks for all the input. We are looking for places to stay that someone has stayed at and really liked.
Popular Point Campground. We did book 3 days there and from there we will head north. We will try the bbq while there in North Carolina. We try not to take the freeways. The smaller side roads are better to see things and stop on the spur of the moment. We maybe trying to get to much in in one trip though.
This looks like 3 or 4 trip to see the sights out there. Later on we are planning a civil war trip that I think will take 3 months.

Ron, Be sure to checkout the little town of Pittsboro while you are at Jordan Lake. Great to walk around in the little shops.

Skyline Drive and/or the Blue Ridge Parkway. Consider a trip through the Smokies with a stop in Cherokee for the "Unto These Hills" outdoor pageant. If you want to stick closer to the coast, consider a stop in Manteo, NC for the Lost Colony outdoor pageant.

I think I'm going to have to change my trip to just Virginia and North Carolina to see all the things that I have seen so far in just that part. There is more than I thought in that part of the country. Everyone has had such great advice.
This is the greatest trip planner ever.Thumbs Up

Thanks to all for the input.

4 Mile Creek State Park (NY), right on L. Ontario is a perfect base camp for the Niagara Falls area.  On a clear night you may see the lights of Toronto Canada across 30 odd miles of lake.  Less than 20 miles from the falls.  Like someone else on this thread said - park your TV near the falls on the American side and walk over Rainbow Bridge to Canada (remember your passport).  Canada and the bridge have the best views and is an easy walk.  Other places to visit nearby:  Goat Island (American side), Welland Canal and Niagara on the Lake (Canadian side).  Traffic across any of the bridges to/from Canada is usually bad.  The Welland Canal is where the big lake freighters and even military ships are seen bypassing the falls on their way to/from Lake Ontario and Erie and the lakes above.  Cool stuff watching huge ships rise or lower as they navigate the numerous locks between the lakes.

We spent three weeks in September/October 2017 traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway Motor Road all the way from Great Smoky Mountains National Park up to Shenandoah National Park - 469 miles plus 105 miles on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah NP. The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most amazing trips we've ever taken, because the whole Parkway is a designated scenic byway with no resorts, towns, etc. You have to hop off to go into town. A couple of lodges, museums, old farmsteads, waterfalls, caves. The vista views are breathtaking and the speed limit a slow-paced 45. At least go to Boone, NC (close to Raleigh), get on the BRP and go to Linville Falls and Linville Caverns if nothing else. From Shenandoah we spent 4 days in Gettysburg, PA, another amazing place to see.

Every time you go around a corner the new view seems better than the last.  A truly spectacular drive.

+1 regarding the BRP.  Don't look at it on the map though and think you can do it in a day or two.  It takes and deserves more time than that.  There are a million things to see and do.  One of my favorites is the Natural Bridge in VA.  It's about a half hour off the BRP, but it's a great side trip.

It's been over 40 years since I visited the Blue Ridge Parkway. I do have fond, if faded, memories of it. I did spend a day white water rafting on the Shenandoah, which was a lot of fun.

Definite +1 for that recommendation! The hike along the trail and the Monocan Indian Living History Village were really interesting.
