Leo? Any good state park type, or inexpensive campgrounds you would recommend in vermont? I've camped in the massachucetts section of the green mounts, N.Adams mass, but i was wondering if theres any must see places up there. I thought about lake champlain, but, not sure if thats a must see. Let me know what ya think if you dont mind.

My favorites are Lake Elmore State Park and Maidstone State Park, I like the more rural areas. They have hiking, fishing, boating and lots of wildlife. They run roughly 18$ a night.
They have some free camping spots on some of the Sate  land in the Northeast Kingdom, but they have no water, electric etc. But they are quiet!!

One great thing about winter in the north, NO mosquitoes, NO black flies, NO stable flies, NO deer flies.  You can just go out in the snow and enjoy nature w/o bugs swarming around your face.  How sweet it is, enjoying nature with 2 feet of snow on the ground, a balmy 6 degrees above zero, and moderate winds blowing in your face, REFRESHING !

How do you do smelt up there? When we lived in Minnesota, we would use a net in a frame. Lay it on the lake bottom, and wait for a school to pass. When they did, we would lift the net/frame, and gather a half-buck of smelt.

Love beer-battered smelt!

You are lucky!!! We are not allowed to net them here. We use jig poles with up to 2 hooks on them. So you can basically get two at a time. Can usually get half of a 5 gallon bucket in 2-3 hrs. We will also cook some up for lunch in the shanty while fishing.
Me too!! nothing live beer battered smelt!!!

Artic front coming thru TN starting today, next few days will be bitter for us. Already fixed one pipe freeze now challenge is to keep house working, the building codes don't support freezes like in North, Pod is safe. Leo - No fishing here:) I'm like Ralphie's little brother I have all my clothes on and can't move. Long week for us:)

At least where we are we can stay warm under the snow(snow caves, snow tunnels), got another 12 inches last night, more came today but haven't measured it yet.  Am glad to say we don't have the snow amount that Erie, Pennsylvania has, at least not yet.

It was like a heat wave today we got up to 6 degrees. We got a little dusting today..........got around 2 feet of snow on the ground.
Looks like it will drop to -15 tonight, luckily we haven't had much wind or it would be worse. The only saving grace is the lakes and ponds are making a lots of ice. fished on 14 inches today some people are starting to drive on the ice.

Leo,  We are finally getting some of your 'global warming' in northern Michigan.  -17 F this morning, a bit on the brisk side, fortunately minimal wind.  Even our big inland lake across the street, Torch Lake is beginning to show signs of freezing over at the north end.  It doesn't happen too often as it is nearly 20 miles long and is 2.5 miles wide at its widest point and averages 250' depth down the middle.  That takes a lot of cold water to freeze over, probably a lot of fish down there too to escape the cold weather up near the surface.

I went ice fishing other other day and there was 14" of ice when usually there is 5-7 inches at this time of the year.
Sounds like that would be a great place to fish!!

The coastline of mass has ice. Gotta be pretty freakin cold to freeze the ocean. Our forecast is for -25 wind chills for the next day or so. A high of about 3 i think they said. On a positive note, I'm working on booking a few sites for the fourth of july week

I think the deep freeze is about over here in lower West Michigan! 7 this morning, tomorrow up into the low 30's, 40's by Wednesday and Thursday. Been here over 30 years and it was one serious deep freeze the past two weeks. Just in time to fly south with the Pod.

There were a couple of big lakes that they would plow a road across in winter for a shortcut. Everyone drove on that. Not too big a deal when the ice is > 3' thick.

Once went to an ice race on Gull Lake (north of Brainerd MN) where there were a couple hundred racers, all their support vehicles, plus 10,000 spectators (and their vehicles) all parked on the ice. They hold an annual ice fishing contest there now that is almost as big.

I used to do tech rep work at Camp Ripley, in the 80s the NGB folks took me ice fishing near Brainerd, MN. First and last time I went, but a blast. I was amazed how deep the snow was and the cold.

Driven by (through?) Camp Ripley hundreds of times going between Brainerd & Minneapolis. We could hear the "big guns" on the Ripley firing range from the north end of Gull Lake (at least 50 miles north of Camp Ripley IIRC). We would listen and try to discern whether it was Ripley or thunder. Wasn't always clear.

Blessed with 7+ inches of snow here this week. Wait, this is the SOUTH and were not suppose to get that four letter word from the sky because here the world shuts down! No school, business close, heck my newspaper or mail didn't even come. Hmmm .... no mail maybe that's a benefit? Oh well our little winter hibernation soon ended because the high the day after was near 50. Go global warming! LOL

We got about 5-1/2" here in Wake Forest. My yard is shaded, so we still have quite a bit of it remaining. Because it has been below freezing at night, ice is still a problem even if the main roads are clear.

Your driveway must not get any sun.  Neither does mine.  It probably still has some snow.  It's long and steep but it's gravel.  I put chains on the FJ and it goes like a tank.  I have more side-to-side chearance than you, which also helps a lot.  Chains are great but it's kind of a hassle to have to use them only on the driveway!  The streets have been clear and dry for days....

I wish you guy's would of kept the snow over on your side of the hill!

Three days after the snow they finally run a plow down my street and I'm thinking why bother! For all you Northern pod owners who plan on moving South this is some of what you have to look forward to come winter time. Wink
