Our Jensen unit died, it was no great loss, we don't use it very much, anyway. However, for those rainy days I am thinking that a portable player that we can use in our house and them move to the Pod for trips might be useful.

The connections in the back are some sort of complicated 'plug in' harness that appears to be 'standard'. Is it feasible to take an 'off the shelf' portable home radio/DVD player and use it in this manner??

Ours was replaced by the previous owner with a AC/DC TV with a DVD player built in. We have a separate AM/FM radio we use if we want music and news if we can't get anything on the TV. Last year I found a Axess 24-Inch 1080p Digital LED Full HDTV AC/DC TV-DVD combo at Amazon Warehouse Deals for $117

Sure it's feasible. You can either cut off the old connector or, if you want to maintain the ability to put in another Jensen unit, you can splice into the wires for your portable player connections. The only thing you really have to be concerned with is the possibility of a ground loop causing humming. If that happens, ground loop isolators are available.

+1 to JandL. That's what I had in my teardrop, there will be some rewiring to do, but it's fairly simple.
