The number one reason for us traveling in a camper is to be comfortable.
Bedding!
I'm a air mattress person. I went Sleep Comfort at home. Wife is Memory foam.. No issue at home, but on the road may be..
What do you use and what do you like, dis-like about it? Me, I'm thinking I may not find a good 'air'..

I'm going to bet that finding an air bed that fits the space (74" x 60") will be a long hard search. Memory foam is another thing though; probably a lot of options.
We still use the original mattress.

I use the original mattress, then a quilt and down comforter. Then another down comforter over me. Perfect..I don't like it too soft.

The original mattress was pitched out of the 177 after 3 nights on it. The middle collapsed and was totally unusable. Replaced with a Eurotop (aka mattress in a roll), Have had it since the summer of 20111 and it is just a comfy now as it was brand new. You won't be disappointed with this mattress.

Camping World lists an R5 Short Queen Select Comfort Mattress. Be prepared for sticker shock though. It is currently on sale at $1329.97. List is 1900.00. I have seen it most often at $1600.
You might want to give the Zinus Short Queen memory foam mattress a look (on Amazon). We bought the 10 inch model. If I had it to do over again, I would have bought the 8 inch model though. The extra 2 inches of thickness and extra weight make it hard to maneuver for getting to the valves under the mattress platform in our 179.

10" short queen memory foam mattress for us in our 179. We plan to cut it in half lengthwise to make two 30"-wide beds that are reoriented 90 degrees so that we have an aisle between them. We'll have to cut one to 60" long, but my wife thinks she can sleep in that space. It will also provide us with a night stand for my CPAP.

At home my sleep number is 35. After 3 back operations and being fused from L2 down to S1, I can't sleep on Memory Foam. I have gone with the twin AeroBed. I travel with a Cushman scooter and that is all, thus all I need is the lower bunk. The Memory foam wasn't cheep, nor was the AeroBed, but if you can stand a Cabelas air mattress on the floor, then try the AeroBed first. My 10 yr old granddaughter likes her new Memory Foam on her bunk bed! Good Luck.

We got a 3" foam piece and cut to fit. Works great. Our mattress was okay but made me stiff and sore. Maybe that is just old age.

I hear you and don't think so much of age, yet comfort.
I should have added that at home I have the Select Comfort, but with a piece of Memory foam on top. To both of us it works. Wife likes it firmer so she adds more air then I. The foam takes up the spaces of side sleeping (both of us) and works.
Just the foam for me will be to hard. I'll keep poking around to find a good air (with or without) a foam top. So far the 'toppers' seem thin (maybe 1-2").
Thanks for all the advise folks!

On a side subject dealing with the bed. I have found sheets are very important. In our 179 if the inside person has to get up for whatever reason it is hard to scoot and move on the sheet over the foam. I bought a set of slick Satan sheets to see if that helps when getting in and out of bed. Slide out of bed.

Our situation of camping is going to be a big learning curve. The 182 gives me options of sleeping arrangements. Queen when we want it and single (twins) as we move around (1 night stay). For the most part I see the twins being used. Not having to setup and breakdown. If we stay in a spot for a week, then setup.
So that adds to my dilemma of mattress choices.
I see, so far, some sort of air base with foam over like we have at home. Have a feeling we will be making our own sheets to work. I also see velcro somewhere in the mix.. LOL

Inexpensive sleeping bags work well and the top sheet doesn't get untucked. One can even zip two together fora double.

That's hilarious! We were just talking about that!
We still have the old Coleman bags we use as a comforter for guests during the winter season on the inflatable. We were just talking about how good they would be as a pillow top to an air mattress.
Way to funny how you mentioned this..

Custom cut foam comes in different densities from super firm to very soft. The thickness matters, especially with softer foams because you can bottom out. Some other advantages to custom cut foam: It fits in the space better. It's way less costly. Good quality foam lasts for many years. It's light weight and it's easy to move around. Rawest50's concern can be solved easily by making a dust cover for the foam. If you can't do it yourself, your local sewing shop can knock one out for you [we've made several in our shop for RVs]. The cover allows sheets to slide just fine. If you wrap the foam in a sheet of batting, it can have a more plush feel to it. The cover can easily be removed [be sure to put a long zipper in it] for washing.
And, yes, sleeping bags work great if it's not too hot. We use two old sleeping bags zipped together that I had on my sail boat for years and sewed two standard sheets together to fit inside. If you sew sheets together sew the sides up a little less than half way to have ease of getting in and out.

I wanted to just use our sleeping bags but the ruler of the house said she wanted sheets. Now the problem is getting the fitted sheets on the bed. The to far corners are a bear to get on.
Thanks for the info on the on the dust cover. If the satin sheets do not work I will look into the cover.

My wife modified a set of sheets to help with making the bed. She sewed the bottom edges of the fitted and top sheets together and sewed elastic straps across the corners of the fitted sheet.

When it's too hot for the sleeping bags, we put a modified fitted sheet on our foam mattress, over a modified regular mattress pad, and a flat sheet on top. If it's a little tool cool for just a sheet, we add a light blanket. Since the foam is cut to fit the space, all stays in place pretty well. The foam is easy to lift at the corners and edges to put on the mattress pad and sheets.
On the fitted sheet and pad we use these little garter like straps that you can buy in the bedding section of places like Target and Walmart, similar to the function described by TheBum.

We did a pair of nice, 50F degree bags, over a eurotop mattress. If we were boondocking and letting it get "airish" at night, we threw on an extra comforter.

We use a custom fitted bottom sheet that my wife made. On the top we have various choices depending on the weather. We use a regular cotton sheet or a flannel sheet for the top. Then we use either a lightweight pile blanket or an unzipped old Coleman slleeping bag. Sometimes we use both or we also have a second Coleman bag that can either be zipped together for a tandem or 2separate bags. The Coleman bags are at least 15years old .we store the extra sleeping gear in a plastic tote Vann

With the sleeping bags, one doesn't have to run down the battery at night with the fan, and just wait until morning to reach over and turn on the heater , and start the percolator . by the time the percolator is finished it is warm - sort of - in the pod.

We finally made a choice. Ya we're slow of this stuff... Actually just research a lot and discuss what we like and don't. Finally we both said 'Yes'. And a buy two deal that put me at $107. The next one of same type that we liked was at $120 each.
The quest came down to 4" thick and 30" wide. Well, that's a challenge as we learned. Also found we want something that had air (adjustment of firmness) and foam (in case it fails at night).
Here's what I bought. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FELZ3TW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FELZ3TW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
May not be for you and heck, my not be the right choice for us, but we will soon learn.
This is only 3" thick (just under the goal) but with the pad that comes with the R-Pod should put us at 5" of mattress and adjustable firmness.

I use them for research, most of the time, the same thing can be found cheaper elsewhere, but sometimes, they are cheaper, or the only ones with a certain item.. They recently seem to be doing better on their pricing, AND, now offer free shipping, no minimum purchase etc, for Good Sam members.

The exact measurements on my 2016 171 are 74 1/2 X 62. Are all R-pods the same??
I'm looking for a fairly firm mattress to fit it, eurotop is too expensive, so is Camping World. I like the idea of a futon type, not too thick thats easy to move. Any ideas?
