We have never been on a long enough trip where we used the toilet often enough to fill up the black tank, so before I empty the tanks I have to use fresh water to fill up the BT and then dump it. I have thought about removing the toilet, cover the opening to the BT and then mount my porta-potty which would use up a lot less water and be easier to empty. Has anyone done this? Pros/cons? Thanks for any suggestions.

Having had to deal with a porta-potty on my first sail boat, I'd much rather deal with adding some water to the black water tank. Lugging the porta-potty to a bathroom to dump it is a pain. It inevitably spills and you end up having to clean up the mess.

If your pod has a hose attachment for the black water tank, it's easy to fill it up. I've filled ours from above at the toilet and it's no big deal. Recently, I got one of those hose fitting external valves that has along with a clear plastic section to see what is coming out. I's really easy to use; much simpler than dealing with a porta-potty.

+1, I think my wife would quit speaking to me if I removed the toilet. I had a porta-potty in first RV, a 1974 Ford Econoline, and it was a hassle compared to the Pod toilet. Easy to add water.

I've thought about removing the whole bathroom. Can that be done? It would make more room in my 171, and I don't use the shower or toilet.

Of course one can remove the entire head enclosure and all related parts. It's just a matter of going at it with a sawsall and cleaning up the mess. Of course, you'll have to deal with patching up all the holes, such as in the floor and wall where plumbing is located, and rerouting wiring. If you just took out the head and closed the drain pipe and covered the hole, you'd have a closet to use and when you sold it you could restore the toilet.

Making major downgrades in your pod to accommodate your preferences is perfectly possible, but the question really is why do it? If they are not easily reversible and are inconsistent with what the used trailer market is willing to buy, all you accomplish in the end is having a trailer that is hard to sell and is more likely to be in the salvage value range.

You'd probably be better off selling your Pod and looking for a comparably sized trailer that came stock with out a head. They are a lot cheaper and in the end, you'd save a lot of money.

Henry, I don't mean to change your mind about taking out the head. Just offering some of the practical effects of such a project. The most important part of having a travel trailer is having one in which you are comfortable.

In case it helps, we find the wet bath on our 179 to be great for easily-accessible storage. On a recent 5-night campout I piled relatively light soft items on the toilet seat to get them out of the way but still accessible, and other items on the shower floor. So the wet bath holds a lot even with the toilet in place (and we knew we wouldn't be using our shower this trip, as the location had a shower house).
