Subject: WIFI Tow Vehcile setup
Date Posted: 13 Oct 2017 at 3:05pm
My new tow vehicle is setup as a WIFI Hotspot. I guess that is what it is called. Not too familiar with the terminology. What I am wondering is can I set it up to stay on through the aux switch on the ignition. Right now it goes off in a few minutes. I know it will draw on battery power so I am not sure if that is a good idea if it can be done.
Any suggestions on how I can take advantage of my TV WIFI? It has a range of about 70 feet. Will connect up to 7 ipads, iphones, etc.

What's it use for the uplink? Presumably you have to add it (the TV) to your cell service? Or does it use something like satellite service for the uplink?
WiFi by itself means nothing. It's really what it depends on for the uplink.

It uses OnStar Remote link. 3G, 4G, LTE. Is does not say but I assume it is Satellite since the manual refers to satellite radio.

"3G, 4G, LTE" says it is using a cellular connection. It will use whatever data connection your OnStar remote link can use. Wonder what data charges there would be? It should be pointed out (in case it's not obvious) that if you are in a "no cell zone", there will be no WiFi either.

As I recall, we decided not to use ours and it was related to cost.

It is through my truck. How can I keep my truck WIFI on without the engine running? If my truck is running I have WIFI. If on aux it goes off after a few minutes.

Owners manual does not address keeping the WIFI available. Think of it this. You get out of your vehicle. Lock the doors. Lights go off. So does the WIFI. Trucks electrical power shuts off. How can I keep the power to the whatever that powers the WIFI. That is why I said the aux on the egnition keep the power to the WIFI, radio, etc.

Why not use your phone data that you are already paying for, and just set it to be a hot spot?

Yeah, I use my phone as a mobile hot spot, but if your truck gives you unlimited data for $20, that's a good deal. Depending on the speed they provide.
Leave the truck key in the on position (but not running), use another set of keys to lock the door.
Google might have a better idea.

This question could be answered easier in a forum related to your vehicle. I have an f150 and the f150forum.net has answered any question you can think of relating to the truck.

I Googled it just to see if I could make a constructive comment. I know my wife elected to not pay the 20 or 200 for a years use, I'm sure reason it stops when truck is not powered is to conserve batt, but honestly not sure. Lot of comments on service and reviews on the interweb. Nothing that addresses your issue. I personally don't use mine, but certainly doesn't make you wrong. If you do find some answers let me know I would be interested.

I can't speak for GlueGuy, but I sure thought he was joking...
Other comments about looking elsewhere for the answer to your question are spot on. Certainly no harm in asking here but this, obviously, isn't a forum on F150s or WiFi connectivity.

You may be able to do what I did with one of the accessory outlets in our Highlander: use a fuse tap and wire the Wifi circuit into an always-on fuse socket.

TT | Jokes sometimes don't translate in text. I'm kind of a sarcastic guy, and sometimes that just doesn't work through the interwebs.

rawest50, everything I have looked at says the WIFI is enabled when the truck is running or in the ACC mode, nothing more. I recall the dealership giving us a tour when we bought the truck and the WIFI was covered. Best I could do.

Thanks a lot. I will try and see what it does. I was thinking I was listening to the radio and after a few minutes it went off but it might not have been in the ACC mode.

Our F-150 will run things in ACC mode for 15-20 minutes or so, then shuts down. You can change the timeout if you wish.

Rawest50,
My radio is on a time delay not associated with ACC, when truck is off and I haven't opened a door. There is a point where truck shuts down from inactivity, if on ACC it stays on. If there is a place to adjust that time delay I haven't found it.
