I have a 2014 178 with a Dometic RM8501 refrigerator. Turns out the lower board is no good and Dometic wants $580.00 for the replacement part. They only installed this model refrigerator for a short time as it no good. Has anyone had this problem and has anyone just put a regular small (dorm type) refrigerator in? A Dometic replacement frig is $1300.00 and I really don't need a unit that runs off of LP.

Years ago, I put a small reefer in an Airstream I had. Worked fine, had one power option - 120A/C, but that was fine for me at time. It never failed to cool and was in there when I sold trailer. I did it because cost of replacement was much less than RV reefer.

Sorry to learn of your refrigerator problem. My suggestion is if you have a friend who has a background in electronics then have them take a look at your board. It maybe malfunctioning because of something as simple as a cold solder joint or open capacitor. At $1300 I too would be looking at other options from other RV refrigerator manufacturers first before I would consider putting in a 120 VAC "dorm room" refrigerator in its place.

Worth to have it checked before you decide for $1300 replacement.
