Hi all,

I just put a down payment on a 2018 178 R-Pod. This is my first RV. The largest things I have towed are a snowmobile and a boat trailer. So I have a few questions I hope you can help me with.

I am going to buy a new truck to tow it with, probably an F-150  with a tow pkg and trailer brake control. I haven’t decided on which engine yet but from what I see any of them would be more than adequate to tow the Pod. I might also look at the Tundra but I think it will be the Ford.

Do I need a WDH/Sway hitch for this set-up? The dealer suggested an EAZ Lift R3 that they would install for $435. I see you can buy them online for around $300. If needed, are they difficult to install and do you just swap the 2-5/16 inch hitch ball for a 2”?

I have this Draw-Tite hitch ball mount. Can I use it with a 2 “ ball?

Is there a list of must-haves that I should buy before I go on my first camping experience?

Like a Water pressure regulator - I saw one at Walmart that said it was pre set to 40-50 lbs.

Electric adapter plugs , longer hoses and electric cord, etc.

Thanks.

Here is my list I used which was collected from multiple posts on this site:

RV Assessory Checklist (items you need to buy, should buy, or just some that are nice to have)

Extended warranty.  Do not buy third party.  Forest River sells a one year extended warranty for $150.00 The dealer makes no money off of it and may not tell you about it and try to sell you their version (which legally cannot be called a warranty – it is an extended service plan).  You must act quickly, as offer expires ten days after purchase!.  Call Forest River directly if dealer acts ignorant.  Dealer service plans are generally expensive and most reviews are negative.  Some dealers include a free unlimited warranty.  This is not a scam but may not be a good deal.  You have to bring you RV back to dealer once a year for $150 inspection to keep warranty active.  And then it does not really warranty the RV (leaks, axle breaks) but rather the components (refrig, heater).  Only worth buying at a dealer that includes it if they do not charge more for the RV.  One dealer who was $3000 more than another said, “but the warranty is free and that’s worth the $3000 difference!”

Brake controller – Even if TV has towing package it probably lacks a break controller.  Tekumsa P2 is highly rated but more expensive.  The less expensive the unit the more it has to be in a fixed position (i.e. parallel to ground).  It comes with wires to splice into TV however most tow packages already have the female harness so only need to buy male harness for your vehicle (around $18) then no searching for the correct wires to splice into, and you can remove unit at will.  An internet search for your TV will let you know where to find the hitch.  On our Jeep Cherokee it was hidden away and we could not find it until we found a UTube video demonstration.

Weight distribution (WDH) and anti sway

-Equal-i-zer weight distribution hitch 10,000 lbs $408  includes 4 pt friction sway control.

-Blue OX is also highly rated.  It prevents sway instead of correcting it.  It is $600 and easier to connect.  Get 350 lb tongue weight version

Also popular is the Fastway E2 600 tongue weight model.  It is cheapest of the three

-There are numerous cheaper options.  But you may not be able to back up and/or do not have anti sway, only weight distribution.  Most people say anti-sway is required but WDH is not necessary as larger tow vehicles can handle it well.

Other items

White water hose (for drinking water only) 25’ Camco $9.97

Garden water hose (for black water flush and all other washing)

             Water filter with right angle

             Water pressure regulator

Y connector to attach two hoses to single water line

Oxy-Kem holding tank treatment.  Turn off vent fan when going to the bathroom.  Always wait until black tank is 2/3 full before emptying

Sewer hose 2 x 10’ is better than single 15 foot (Valterra D04-0275 newer version comes with clear elbow $50.50).  Reported to have less leaks than Camco model

Sewer elbow to connect to ground hole (comes with Valterra above)

Sewer elbow clear to connect to RV to see when water is clean Valterra T1026  $11.50 (also comes with Valterra above)

Sewer hose holder to keep hose slanted to ground Camco 43051 20’ $22.94

Disposable gloves for cleaning out holding tanks (or strong rubber gloves to re-use and save the environment)

NCVT Fluke volt alert (looks like a penlight)– standing on the ground touch the door frame or steps if there is voltage leak it will light up preventing a shock.  Do it when first setting up camp and connecting electric. Not needed if you get surge protection (see below)

Tire leveling plastic with chock for under tires

Plastic pads for stabilizers (Do not use wood)

Lock for trailer hitch to prevent someone from stealing your RV when left alone unhooked

Leveling guides. One type goes on hitch and turns to tell you how many inches to raise RV. Other types stick to side walls.

Propane tank gauge.  May need to get second tank but try it first with one tank.

Bug and rodent screens – Spiders in furnace, refrigerator and hot water heater can do damage.  Need to get screens for all vents.  Camco 42154 for Dometic refrigerator Pack of 6 vents $15.88.  Camco 42141 furnace vent screen 2 Pack $10.86. Camco 42145 Large screen for water heater $16.00

Lawn mat (Do not use plastic grass – stays wet) use porous material made for RVing

             Dust broom with pan

             Lanterns and flashlight

             Spare fuses

BBQ Grill –  can get propane now that 2017.5 RV has quick connector

Propane hose extension 10 foot Camco $21.26 (not the standard size 3/8”).  Will need a bunch of adapters to fit your grill.

Sticky mats to keep things on the counter

Wood dowels to keep windows closed and locked – so they do not open during drives

Expandable drapery rods to put in refrigerator to hold food in place

Oxygenics  BodySpa RV shower kit – white (Model ETL26781) Amazon $31.13.  Sends water at higher pressure thus using less water for a shower.  Great product reviews, really works. Made for RV

That is a long list of what-not!..
I tow my 178 with a f150 and regular old 2" ball. I have felt a little bounce but nothing that would make me think twice of going camping. I think most of that can be corrected with weight distribution of your gear in the trailer. Our first camp trip was dry camping with a 1 and 9 year old.. best time ever! Don't let the little details overwhelm you, this is camping.. think of what you would have if you were in a tent and how much more you have in the trailer. I recommend 2 6vs if dry camping, extra propane tank you can switch out on the fly, outdoor cook stove, good food and beer.

I bought my 2017 179 in April of this year and got the Forest River 1 year extended warranty (1 additional year over the first year) for $150. Are we sure it changed since then? Many dealers won't mention this in order to sell pricier insurance. My first Rpod in 2016 the FR 1 yr was neglected to be mentioned by a different dealer.

As far as leveling your RV side to side I have the Andersen Camper Leveler. I can level my Pod by myself. Really neat system. Check it out. I have seen them from $29 - $50 so shop around. Level up to 4".

http://www.hitchsource.com/andersen-camper-leveler-p-36801.html?pn=8554521413&cn=shopping_andersen&ag=CamperLeveler&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzv7jwaPP1QIVFrnACh1ItQbCEAQYAiABEgJTwvD_BwE

Oxygenics BodySpa RV shower kit. Must have. Works fantastic.

Found this out the hard way. A grill is a great item but it must not have a regulator in the hose. Your Pod has a regulator and two in one line does not work. I bought the extra tank frame and when I install it I will tee off before the pod regulator with valve to by pass the pod regulator. You also might find a line that fits the quick connect and your grill with out the regulator. My grill has a 5/8" male connector and I have not been able to find one. Most grills must be 3/8".

I ask the dealer to install the levels. One front and one side at the front corner.

If you do not have a powered jack, get one. Cranking sucks. I bought mine for about $170 and it was worth every penny when it comes to connecting my load/sway control.

I tried the Oxygenics RV shower in my Casita camper and didn't like it, so returned it.  I know a lot of people recommend it, but my water pump didn't seem to have enough power to get a full spray.  I suspect the people that like it are using city water and not dry camping?  My factory shower head sprayed a lot better using my water pump.

That Anderson Camper leveler seems to work great, but you are limited to about a 4" lift.  My favorite camper leveler is the Bal Light trailer leveler.  Just use your drill that you use to drop your stabilizers and it's done in seconds:

I think the best way to approach accesories is to decide which ones make sense to you.  For example I don't have a water filtration system because we carry bottled water to drink.  I do have a pressure regulator and a white and green hose.  use your judgement.  The fluke volt alert is important.  It can prevent electrocution due to a poorly wired site or a bad connection.

Looks good. How high can you level? Most sites I have camped on the side to side is pretty level. Font to back varies.

Not sure what that question is "how I can you level"?? I've been camping in a lot of places that are way off level. But that's dry camping. Campgrounds are usually pretty level

Ha ha. Ok. It will crank up a lot more than four inches but my pod is in the shop trying to figure out why the refer doesn't cool as well with gas as it does with electric so I can't measure it right now

OTOH, I found that our water pump delivers a better spray from the Oxygenics shower head than when hooked to city water through the pressure limiter fitting. When I tested it at home with the pump, I had a good shower. My wife complained that it was inadequate when we tried it on a city water hookup in a campground.

The Andersen leveler is very easy to use. The BAL leveler on my 179 is simple, but takes a lot of work to crank it up. I tried my power drill/driver, but it did not have enough torque to raise the 179. It does go higher but the thing I don't like about it is that it is tilts as it raises which is putting more pressure on the outside of the tire and sidewall the higher it is raised. If the supports for the tires swiveled so that the tire would be supported evenly across the tread, it would be much better. Unfortunately, that would also probably make it a lot heavier. It is already much more bulky and heavy than the Andersen leveler or the stacking block levelers.

My experience with the Oxygenics shower head was just the opposite.  With the on-board pump it couldn't produce a good spray like the factory head, and that indicates ONE thing...it uses more water (instead of less like it's advertised).  If I can get a better spray with the factory head and low pressure, and very poor spray with the Oxygenics, that sorta speaks for itself as to the amount of water it will use.  Your mileage may vary! LOL

Actually the Bal leveler presents no problem on the sidewalls of the tires and that's not even a problem worth looking for.  If you install it correctly (with the pads in the center of the tire) you'll not see any excess pressure on the sidewalls and they've been around a lot longer than the Anderson leveler (which still requires one person to drive the vehicle and one to make sure it's level. The Bal leveler only requires one person) and my Craftsman 20v drill on the low-speed (power) setting has lifted much larger trailers than an R-pod.  Just make sure you are using the right tool for the right job.  But again, your experiences and mine are completely opposite so buyer beware.  I know I've seen several posts on many different forums about people that like the Oxygenics, but not everyone does.  I've talked to several people that returned theirs as I did.  But whatever floats your boat! (smile)

I got our Oxygenics when it was on sale at Camping World. It is possible that there is a difference in ones made for RV use and ones made for home use. We have had one at home for years, and while the one in the R-Pod isn't as powerful, it is an improvement over the stock shower head, at least when the water pump is running.

How is that post on issues such as NHpod ask morph int the pro's and con's of shower heads? LOL

Whether you need a WDH and anti-sway hitch all depends on many factors such as what your going to be pulling your Pod with and how comfortable are you with pulling your trailer without one? To me the Fastway E2 WDN with 2 point anti-sway was cheap insurance to help insure safe towing. Anything I can do, like a decent brake controller if your vehicle doesn't have one, to insure safety is money well spent.

If your buy a WDH it should have a ball on it. If you decided to only use the hitch you pictured you'll be able to hook it up to your Pod but you better make sure that its fairly level, vehicle and hooked up trailer together.

Good luck, hope my 2 cents helped .....  now back to shower heads! Tongue

I hope someone who knows much more then I do can give you a better answer then I can but hey what the heck I'll give it a shot. The reason you want some type of surge protection should is that it not be called not surge but electrical protection. As in lets say when you hook up to some campground shore power and their ground is faulty meaning you have no ground or that instead of 120Vac your getting 220 Vac voltage. A good surge protector can tell you that you have 'clean' power and no faults when you plug in. The bonus is if you have such is if the electrical system of the campground your plug into does some how get hit with a lightening strike then the surge protector you have will in theory send this tremendous voltage spike to ground and not fry out everything you have in your camper. Hopes this some what answer your question and not completely fry your mind Tongue

Just contacted FR for my region and got this reply concerning warrenty:

"Good Morning Jack,
I do apologize, however Forest River does not offer extended warranty. We have 1 year manufacturing warranty.

Thank you-

Update - FR rep sent me another email saying that the extended warranty is still offered if my serial number is below 18738.  Hopefully it is.  Will know when I pick up on Saturday.

Not good enough.  Here is the form to get the extended warranty.  Must be purchased within 90 days of being new.  This form was sent out by FR in April of this year and it's still valid.  I have another month to decide if I want a 1-year extended warranty for $150.  Don't believe everything one of the FR secretaries tell you.  This is a legal/binding warranty extension form.  By the way, this is for the Eastern region.  I bought this in AR

Here's the final word on the extended warranty.  I'll put this in a separate thread also to help others.

I called my dealer this morning and talked to the office girl that fills out the paperwork.  The one I had in July had quit so I had to talk to someone else that didn't know what they were talking about (Great Lakes RV in Gassville, AR).  I told her that the girl that filled out my paperwork showed me that extended warranty form and explained it to me.  She called me a liar and told me they never go over the Forest River paperwork.  They only explain their paperwork and the expensive extended warranty that they sell (I think her name was Sandy).  I told her that if this FR warranty was no longer in effect that they should remove it from the packet they give the customer.  She told me they were not allowed to do that (another lie).  I finally got tired of arguing with her so I hung up.  Then I called FR.  Heather in Warranty told me "We didn't a buy a license for the extended warranty so we don't offer it anymore."  I told her, "You are the manufacturer.  You don't have to buy a license to warranty a product you make.  You can offer any warranty you want."  She just wanted to argue also so I hung up on her too.  Then I called the manager of Great Lakes RV (Tom) and told him the whole story of my two conversations.  He said, "I'll be taking care of this when we get off the phone.  This won't stop here."  (when I told him how his office girl had treated me).  He called me back in about an hour and said he talked to "the powers that be" at Forest River and was told that I can still buy the extended warranty.  "Any trailer that left the factory before June of 2017 and has a serial number with the last 5 digits ending in less than 18737 can still buy the warranty if it's within your 90 days."  He also said, "You are not Forest River's customer.  You are MY customer and I'll take care of you.  I talked to my Rep and he said that information is OFFICIAL.  Send in your check and if you have any trouble, call me and I'll take care of it."  He also said that his office girl was incorrect as whenever any paperwork needs to be deleted from the packet, his Rep tells them to do so and they do so.  But that they've had no word to remove anything yet so the warranty is still in effect for those particular units falling within the guidelines.

I think that puts an end to the rumor that Forest River doesn't offer the 1-year extended warranty anymore, which is only a partially true statement.

Ok, just got another email from FR rep correcting her mistake.  She said the extended warranty is still offered if the serial number is before 18738 and there should be an application in my packet when I pick up.

Don't know what my serial number is but will pick up on Saturday and find out.  Fingers crossed.
