I've been a member of this great forum since we decided to get our pod last fall.  Not only have I enjoyed others mods and advice, but I've so learned so much as this is our first trailer.  I've tried to inform others owners of my mods and lessons I've learned along the way.  What I loved about this forum was the abilty for the poster to easily use pictures to explain solutions or problems.  A picture is worth a 1,000 words.

It seems as if since the server upgrade there have been many comments on difficulty posting and therefore less pics being posted.  I read issues owners are having where in the past a picture would have been posted along with the problem which would better identify the issue.  And I really miss some of the mod pics that no longer go out.  I appreciate the work the Admin Group does and the time they put in.  I personally have figured out the new posting process, but I think the process has others frustrated.  Is there a way that we can get back to easy picture posting?  I think most would notice that picture are being posted less often.

Thanks for this great community! Big smile
Jeff

I don't know how you post pictures here, but I use the way most forums use and that is upload my pictures to photobucket.com, copy the "direct" link for each picture, then paste it my post between

I can't put the code here because it deletes it since I don't have any picture so I'll spell it out.
[eye MG] and [/eye MG]  (replace the "eye" with the letter "I")

(put your "direct" link where the "and" is.) and they show up fine.  Not too difficult, but I do wish all these forums had ways to post (drag and drop) pictures right into our post.

I think the main issue is that the forum software is from 2009. A lot has changed in the internet world in the last few years.

I understand photobucke just changed their TOS to require some ungodly amount like $399 a year to continue to use it as a remote host.  That's why you're seeing so many 'photo not found' markers on fora lately.

I'm not paying anything for photobucket hosting, but you're right, a lot of the really old posts have dead photo links and I was wondering why.  I thought maybe the person that posted those pictures have deleted them from their photobucket?

There are many other forums I've used that are very simple to post pictures. This one is by far the worst, I asked the question awhile ago too and replies were "those other formus cost money to operate". While that may be true, I would think the user amount on here could justify a little advertising ($) to move to a better format. I really enjoy using forums that you can post a pic from your phone.

One of the things I like about this forum is the lack of ads.  We are able to keep it this way because we have a generous host.  I hope that our host knows that most of us appreciate this forum like it is.

Is it really that complicated to post pictures directly to a site like this one that it would be a costly proposition for those who operate it?  Just wondering.  I really don't know the technology involved.

I have never posted pictures simply because it is too complicated and I don't maintain any outside service to store pictures for any reason

Quite frankly, with all the hacking and such that goes on, I don't want to give the bad guys another opportunity to do their dirty work.  I thought about using an outside service just for pictures I may want to post, but it's way too much work and I'd rather go camping and do other things.

Just my 2¢ worth.

I doubt it costs more than $300-$400 per year to host this forum.

There are over 6,000 members. If everyone pitched in 25 cents per year, it would cover all the hosting costs. If everyone pitched in a buck per year, we'd even be able to provide modest compensation to the admin.

  1. The cost of hosting a forum that supports direct image posting is dramatically higher because it costs money to store all those files.
  2. Some time ago we went through the search exercise on the old LivinLite Forum, before Thor took it over. The potential cost was significantly higher than $300-$400.
  3. Of the 6409 registered members only a small percentage are still present and active; I would guess no more than 1-2 percent. Among those there is a strong resistance to contributing financially, and without that or forced dues assessment, it becomes financially expensive and risky to take on a full service hosting service.

That said, this forum did lose a lot when we switched hosting services and lost the image and file storage capability. Perhaps a victim of our own success.

Is there a reason why we couldn't open a Patreon account and begin accepting dollars to fund future site development? It would allow us who find the site valuable to choose a support level (e.g. $3, $5, $10, $20 per month). The money could be used to upgrade to better scalable servers (AWS). We have plenty of tech folks on the site who could give their input to where to place the code. Here's the link to Patreon: https://www.patreon.com - https://www.patreon.com

I learned the hard way that Photobucket now wants to rip you off to direct link your photos. I also learn its a royal PIA to try do the same with Flikr, Google Photo, and other web image photo sites. The answer I found is right when you hit the insert image radio button here where is says you can use http://postimages.org/. Try it, it's just like TinyUrl except for images and its free! They even have a niffty little app you can add to your computer to make it even easier.
