After one short trip we replaced the stock mattress with the Zinus model. Mostly it was due to the huge difference between wifey (110 lbs) and me (250+). She couldn't sleep on the uphill slope so we went with the innerspring mattress. Now I need to dispose of the old one that was used three nights. I don't want to just throw it away because it might be useful for smaller people. Anyone have any ideas?

We tried to take ours to Goodwill, they would not take, hard to find anyone in this area interested in used mattresses. It went to the trash. BTW - offered to homeless shelter that said Nope.

Thanks, mcarter. I was afraid that's where it would end up. Seems like a waste, but I wouldn't want a used mattress either. That's one reason we bought a brand new trailer.

I used some of the material from the mattress to replace the soft foam in the ottoman cushions in our 179. It helped since the mattress foam does not sag as much as the original foam. I rolled the rest, wrapped it in plastic, and it is stored in our attic. I am thinking about making a replacement cushion for the dinette back that can be used instead of the individual cushions if we need to have someone else sleep there. I haven't quite got that part figured out yet though.

Aha, we did the same as you except we were slow learners, we didn't come to that conclusion until our 3rd weekend trip. I thought, this is about as bad as sleeping in a 2 man pup tent on the ground. Anyway we replaced with a Euro mattress (still extremely comfortable after 5 + years) and put the stock mattress on Craig's List for FREE or best offer and it went quickly. Had numerous calls, got rid of it on the 2nd day after posting.

I posted it free on Craigslist. You'd be surprised what people will take when free and at least it's not going into the landfill (for a while, at least.)

FWIW we used ours for four years then donated it to Goodwill. Each Goodwill franchise has its own philosophy about what it takes so it pays to ask. ours was clean and they felt it would be a quick sell.

I'm guessing a mattress that hasn't been soiled significantly can be cleaned up. I've never really thought about it...

In Denver there is a nonprofit that recycles mattresses for $10. I take all of mine there. I cannot imagine were the only ones in the country with this.
