Hi everyone:
We're just about to buy an R-Pod 190 and we have a few questions (now that's a surprise, right? We live in Chicago-land and want to take our pod to Southern California in DECEMBER to visit our kids. We also would bring the pod back at the end of January. How do you do this with coming back into cold weather? Do you winterize the pod before leaving California? Maybe this is a plan that just won't work. We'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks Pam |

Welcome to the group! Congrats on your new Rpod!
Winterizing is a fairly easy process, I would travel back home and then winterize once I got home. It would take 2-3 days of freezing weather for problems to start arising. Sounds like a great trip! |

Winterizing would depend on how long and the route by which you plan to travel. If you travel where it will be above freezing during the day for most of your travel, then I would agree with LeoB. If, on the other hand, you will be traveling where it will be below freezing for much of the trip, I would play it safe and winterize before, especially if you will be traveling for longer than the 2-3 days in sub-freezing temperatures.
During our last trip out west in December, we encountered temperatures in the 20's at night, but above freezing during the day. We plan on making a similar trip this year, but part of our trip will be to Salt Lake City. It is farther north and more subject to freezing temps than where we were last year. I have to make the same decision whether to winterize or not or even whether to leave the R-Pod at home and fly. Driving through snow would not be my idea of fun. ![]() |

Thank you all so much for that response on winterizing for our California trip! We are one or two days away from making our final decision on the our pod one more quick question what was your final decision to buy a small travel trailer. We are longtime boaters both sail and power so are you still living in small spaces, but we have never owned a travel trailer. Any advice as to what your decisions and tailed would be most welcome

Our choice was influenced by out tow vehicle (2016 Ford Escape SE, factory tow package (3500 lbs rated) with 2L Ecoboost engine). I had wanted to get a Casita or similar fiberglass egg. I thought I had a deal to purchase one that turned out to be a scam in which I lost a significant amount of money.

Thank you so much Steven for that valuable information about the arrow wind deflector. We will look at that we have a Jeep grand Cherokee he and of course tell weight is of interest to us as well. We have decided on the 179 and hope to buy it within the next few days I'll keep you posted Pam

Specifically, it is the AeroPlus by Purpleline USA. There is also the AeroShield by Icon. I would look at the options and decide which (if any) best meets your needs.

Winterizing is fairly simple, for me the whole process takes under 5 minutes.
1. turn the 3 valves opposite to the position they are currently in (bypass for hot water heater) 2. drain hot water heater, 3. blow out water lines using compressed air - this step takes under 1 minute 4. add rv antifreeze to your 2 sink traps and shower trap (total needed, about 1 pint) 5. open low point drain lines, marked by decals on your pod. my 177 has 2 of these. That is it. |
