hi all,
My husband, Lew and I just purchased a 183g after Over a year of consideration. For us it was love at first sight. Then when I saw a pod with a garage it became a mission. We pick up our "Phish Bowl" on Saturday. Our question is this, What do we do first? What add-ones or modifications did you make that you could not live without? We only dry camp, spending our summer at east coast music festivals and have down sized from a full sized rv. What size/kind of solar panel should we get? Should we upgrade to two tanks and two batteries? Is there a larger fridge options or is it really necessary? Already have a new mattress 😄. What extra gadgets and gizmos do you find you need? Thanks in advance for all you help and guidance. We are ecstatic to start podding with you!

Welcome to the group and congratulations! 
If you camp a lot without hook-ups then, I would upgrade the battery situation first. Without electricity, nothing works. Since you only dry camp, you may want to look into golf cart batteries (assuming you stay a few days at each place). |

I've been eyeing the Zamp 200p for my rpod. Not sure how to handle the battery situation yet though. First thing I'd do is clean it top to bottom and initiate it by placing a drink in the fridge. :) Only after that point, is it truly yours.

Glad you upgraded your mattress, that was the first thing we did when we purchased our 177 back in 2011 after our third trip. We are now starting our 6th year with our 2 12v. deep cycle marine batteries. We can normally get 3-5 days out of them depending on how much we use the furnace. If we hit the furnace button a lot . . . 3 days. If summertime and no furnace . . .5 days, per battery. A lot of info here about the 6v. golf cart batteries, something we may consider when our current batteries bite the bullet.

Welcome! First thing: Look it over thoroughly. Go under the sink and other places where there is plumbing and check that everything is tight (it was not in my 179). Make sure you understand where everything is and that it is working properly to your satisfaction. Add ons/mods? For me, I needed a place to put my CPAP machine. I added a 12 volt outlet to power it and a shelf to hold it. As for other items, what might be important for me may not matter for you. You are the best one to decide what is needed or desirable for you. That being said, you could look at the mods I have made and see if any would be useful for you. See the link in my signature. Dry camping means power is needed. I have two six volt batteries wired in series to provide 12 volts. I carry an extra propane tank. One of these days, I may get a mount and an automatic changeover, but that can wait. As for a larger fridge, no. it is not available. You can easily carry an extra cooler if you find you need it. Extra gadgets and gizmos are things you will decide on as you go. If you downgraded from a larger RV, then you already have an idea of useful items. It is much the same, but you will find that you need to take into account that there is not the extra space to carry a lot of junk like a big RV has. |

Welcome to the Pod world!
you will find a lot of good people here with a huge amount of knowledge and experience. Read the forum and go back through all of the different sections for ideas. the first things we did was to make our Pod personalized. We did things that made it easier for us to use our Pod and stay in it. We did battery upgrades, a bike rack, counter top extensions, changed the bed, added lights and receptacles and many more. Each mod was designed to make our use of the Pod easier and more efficient. check out the mods we did in our mod page listed inour signature. specifically about the refrigerator--we added a small battery operated fan inside the refrigerator to circulate the air which helped the cooling tremendously. We always turn the refrigerator on at least 24 hours prior to using it as it takes that long to cool down to the right temperature. Always put cold food into the unit-never room temp foods. We also use a high quality(Engel) cooler for our drinks and things that don't need a lot of refrigeration. As to dry camping, the main thing is to make sure that you minimize the use of the electrical system, be conservative with water and toilet usage. We use solar rechargeable lights, carry an extra 6 gallons of water, freeze gallon jugs of potable water for ice that can be used for drinking and cooking, installed a small inverter to charge our electronics, installed 2 6v golf cart batteries and use the campground bathrooms as much as possible. There are lots of good suggestions on this and other forums about boon docking . You will love your Pod. It is a great way to travel and have fun. Vann |
