Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right place to post it.

I'm currently searching for a great Satellite Internet solution. We're planning to drive US, CA, US, MX, Central America, South America. US and MX may work via phone and ATT since they just added MX.

But for CA and SA I'm looking for an easy to use Satellite Internet option. One challenge will be not to be too high since hanging cables are the norm in Latin America.

Please share what you have, if you like or hate it, how the set up is, cost, would you buy it again etc.?

Thanks much!

I looked into Satellite Internet and come away discouraged. From the research I did there was much more to invest in for Satellite Internet then Satellite TV. Aiming the satellite dish was also much more difficult than satellite tv. I was speaking with the tech who did some work on our Satellite dish in our home. He told me when they install a dish for Satellite Internet (you have two dishes if you want TV and Internet) that in order for them to correctly aim the dish they have to call in to their office to have someone give them readings on signal strength in order to optimize the signal. That might be tough if you move your trailer every few days.

AT&T has worked well for us all over the US, although there are a few areas where you enter "partner territory" and won't know until you've used too much data for their liking.  We received several texts threatening to cut off data until we re-entered AT&T territory (they didn't cut us off).  I would bet the same is true in Mexico.

Data via satellite phone is very expensive and slow but is probably your only sure connection everywhere.  Looks like there are options for South America, like this:  http://www.groundcontrol.com/South_America_Satellite_Internet.htm

penguin, welcome.  When we were looking into Internet options for our house everyone kept complaining about the lag with satellite, which is why we went with cell phone data.  I'm curious if there are automatic dish aiming options for data like there are for television.  I doubt it - data requires larger equipment.

Lag is a major issue. My stepdad had satellite, it was the suxors. FAST down.. B U T.. when you clicked a link it was 3-4 seconds before it did anything. got annoying in two clicked links..

I would go look at "Gone with the Wynns" and a couple other sites of people who are out there doing it full time and blogging from the road..
