Gas Mileage vs. Luggage Carrier

   DW & I just got 2 kayaks that we will be taking with us when we camp near lakes, etc. Others on the forum have experienced increased gas mileage when towing their pod & the yaks on top of their TV. Apparently the yaks break up & divert some of the air before it hits the front of the pod. 
There will be times that we will not be taking the yaks. So I am wondering if a luggage carrier on top of the TV would affect the gas mileage similar to the yaks. Anyone have any experience with this?
