Topic: low water levels in potable tank Posted: 19 Jul 2015 at 3:42pm |
I drained the potable tank before starting on a recent trip, left maybe 2 gallons in it. Refilled partially at site (NF campground and I had to lug the water to the trailer), perhaps 5 or 6 gallons. Used the usual amounts of water, no showers. That night heard a soft, steady low engine sound, thought it was someone's generator in the distance, but turned water pump off in morning and it stopped. Worried, I put in another 7 or so gallons and water pump worked as usual, with it's immediate throbbing sound. Water heater is functioning well, too.
I don't think I did any damage but any comments are appreciated!!

We turn the water pump on as needed, off when not. It is designed to safely run dry.

Besides, the last thing you want is the water pressure to drop and that insanely loud pump to kick-in at 2 in the morning! I installed an inline accumulator to lessen the amount of times the pump cycles on/off but still shut it off at night....

What he said.
Last Labor Day weekend, on the first night of a 4 day stay, I was doing my dinner dishes at the sink and noticed the water pump turn on unexpectedly, 2-3 times. Upon investigation, I found that the flush valve on the back of the toilet decided it was a good time to crack. It was spraying water from the back of the toilet! Had I not been there/noticed, (and was in the habit of leaving the pump on) the camper would have flooded. Yep, it's a good idea to turn off when not using water because "stuff happens". I turn the pump off out of habit. When dry camping, I don't like to waste precious power on the switch light.

"Stuff Happens' indeed...! Last time I turned on my water pump, and right away could hear water gushing from somewhere. After a minute of looking around, inside then outside, I found the culprit...somehow, one of the faucet handles for the outside shower got turned on, probably just got bumped by the shower head, so there's water spraying all over the place. So yes, I keep the pump off when not using....
