At the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay, Elk Neck State Park is a beautiful and well maintained camping spot. We had a wonderful four days last week; hiking, biking, incredible birdwatching, kayaking and even some great Maryland crab cakes made by the ladies of the North East Grocer. We bought a pound of jumbo lump to take home.

Here's some pics we took:  http://goo.gl/eOVD2m

The only sour note were some very loud and obnoxious camp neighbors. Our first experience with that. I counted about 20 or so partying in the site across from us for two days. With one tent, four cars and six coolers, I have no idea where they all slept. I figured they were all cousins and all married to each other. The loud music, offensive language and flagrant violation of alcohol rules was disappointing. Yes, I did complain to a ranger (there was no camp host in our loop) and even walked over and asked them to turn it down a bit - they did call me "Sir". In retrospect, we should have just moved to another site as there were plenty available surrounded by quiet and respectful campers. It won't keep us from going back, but it was disappointing.

Cool, you got to go inside the lighthouse.  It was closed when we visited spring a year ago.  Did you see the Bald Eagles in the campground?

We did! Sunday was the last day of the season the lighthouse would be open.

Turkey Point is a bit of a special place for me, having sailed passed it a couple of times on my way to the C&D Canal up to Philly and down the Delaware Bay up to Maine. And, from the lighthouse I could almost see Middle River, where I began my sailing adventures. Aberdeen, of course, kept us entertained with a few boomers. I love the Chesapeake Bay.

Oh, eagles! Ha! We lost count after a dozen or so. Couldn't believe it! And hawks..Red shouldered, Red tailed, Sharp-shinned! Flying with the eagles. We've done Cape May in the fall, but this was really incredible. They're all just hanging out, eating and planning the trip down the Bay and points south. My wife is the birder in he family, but this was really special for me too.

We lived in Middle River for 5 years, not on the water but not too far, near Martin State airport.

Heh! Crewed several small cruising sailboats out of Bowleys Quarters. Mostly raced the Wednesday night series with the Glenmar Sailing Association in the early 70's. Fun to see they are still active. Wish I could remember the name of the bar we would all end up at on Wednesday night. Fun times! Was living around Parkville at the time.

My uncle lives in Parkville, and we did for 6 months (rental house) between our house in Middle River and where we live now in Freeland.  Bowley's Quarters did NOT do well in that hurricane around 2001.
