I really like my '08 4Runner Limited 4.0 v6.

Pulling the parachute Pod puts a hurting to any mileage. On last 8,000 mile trip we averaged 13.06 which included a lot of side trips without the pod. Got as low as 6-7 w/55+ head winds and as high as 14 with a tail wind. Speed => 60-65

Yes, those are wild ponies dining on grass while dumping tanks!

I had a 2003 4runner, 4.0 V6 with 4 speed auto . I bought my Pod in 2012. I only towed 3 times that year with the 4Runner, and it was enough to make me start looking at a new vehicle.

The 4Runner got about 13.5mpg @ 65mph towing to Vermont from Connecticut, and about 14.5-15mpg on the way back. Also, I had to drive in 3rd, the 4Runner is short on torque, so 4th overdrive was a no go at any speed over 50mph.

I ended up buying a 2013 VW Touareg TDI (diesel).... I think I could tow 2 R-Pods and it still wouldn't care. I tow 65mph with cruise set, and it stays in 8th gear most of the trip. I get 14-17 mpg towing @65mph. Better when the highway is flat.

So far, it beats the 20/29 mpg ratings when not towing. I won't go back to a gas powered vehicle. I keep my vehicles at least 10 years. The 4runner was a very reliable vehicle. No troubles in ten years of ownership, but it wasn't good enough for long tow trips (200+). I am planning on some epic trips in the future.
