How do you know when to empty the black tank?

If you don't have toilet paper or something else stuck to the sensor in your black tank, just press the black tank button on your monitor panel inside the Pod. It will either register empty, 1/3 full, 2/3 full, or full. It's not very precise, but it's enough to give you a good idea of what's in the tank. If anything is stuck to the sensors (non-RV toilet paper is notorious for doing this), it will give you a falsely high reading (i.e. it will tell you that there is more in the tank than there really is). There are many techniques discussed in this forum for keeping your black tank clean (relatively speaking!).

Generally, it's recommended that you only dump your black tank when it is at least 2/3 full. This is to help the solids get pushed out by the surrounding liquids. Some of the Pods also come with a blank tank flush that you connect a hose (not the one used for drinking water) to which further helps clean out your black tank.
