I'm going to be re-packing my wheel bearings and I have a few questions. how can I find what the correct replacement seals are and if on the remote chance the bearings would need to be replaced how can I find that number.
also, how often do you adjust your trailer brakes and what is the best method. |

The bearings have the part number on the cup ( the inner race)and the cone( the bearings) as for the seal some times you can read the part number on the outside metal. I would just take the old one to where you are going to buy they can match it up.

If you search old posts here people list PN's of kits they've bought from various places that have the seal, the bearings, the races, all of it.
As far as readjusting your brakes, hook up your Pod and back it up, they self adjust when backing up.

Elkhart check the tag on your axle to see what kind it is and take the model number from there, could be a Dexter or a Lippert axle. (tag is on the passenger side on the front of the axle) Easiest to pick up the seals either from an RV Dealer or from a trailer Dealer that sells the axle that you have. I use a trailer dealer here in KC that has all the parts in stock.

It's been a million years since I've packed bearings. I'm not looking forward to making 3 trips to the parts store. Is there a way to tell by looking at the axle tag what size bearings and seals I need? I have a Dexter HF-88.10 0B - 64.50 axle. That B might be an 8. Or do I have to get into the hub? And if so, do I really need to basically take the parts with me (or write down every part number as I pull them out)?
Are the seals the only thing that normally need replacing, assuming no damage? TT |

Yes, just the seals. Unless, like me last year, your screwdriver slips while prying out the seal and you end up dinging the bearing. As far as part numbers... the autoparts stores around here carry exactly one type of seal and one type bearing replacement that even come close to fitting my r-pod's axles. They're both generically labeled "3500 pound axle" on the peg (as opposed to the "5000 pound axle" or "7000 pound axle" ones). There really is no getting it wrong. If I were you, I'd ask your autoparts store if they've got a return policy for unopened product and then go and pick 'em up before you start unbolting your lug nuts. Worst case, you get your hub off, see that the new ones don't fit, swear at me and go back to the store. But, I doubt that'll happen.

Resurrecting an old thread just to add some info.
The part number for the seals is 171255TB: Went to three different auto supply stores around me and ended up ordering from etrailer. Now my pod is barefoot and up on jack stands waiting for them to arrive. BTW, after 11K miles the bearings, race(s) and spindles look great. fred

I replaced the seals when I repacked the bearings. My local Car quest auto parts store had the bearings in stock for $7.34 each. the part number is 473336.

It seems Forrest River has used a number of different axle combos.
Mine is a Dexter #8  This system uses the Dexter EZ-Lube spindle. Although they say you don't have to pull the drum to repack bearings, I decided to do a good inspection and learn how to do it. I do have a bearing packer. Not confident in palm method. With the drum pulled:  And here is a document I found with info from Dexter on the system: Hope that helps! fred |
