This Friday we take the ride to greencastle to buy the R-Pod 171. I have a 07 v-6 highlander with tow package and the car is rather soft in the back end. Does anyone here have experience towing a trailer (2400-2600lbs) with the highlander. I am a bit apprehensive with my first trip with this trailer being 400 miles.
Thanks

Hi Saratoga! We taught in Saratoga Springs for over thirty years and are now retired. We are snowbirds and we pull our rPod up and down the east coast camping along the way. Love it!

Attended nephew's bachelor party weekend in Saratoga Springs (rented house on the lake) 2 years ago. It was....interesting.
Your Highlander has a towing limit of 3500#, right? Seems you are within the 80% rule range. Will you be using a WD Hitch and sway control? There are a lot of folks here with much more experience than me, but I can tell you our 600 mile maiden voyage with our new 178 behind a 07 4Runner (5000# tow limit) was easy and pleasurable. I will be curious what your experience is and what mpg you get. We got 13.5 mpg on our first trip 55-60. |

We are looking forward to becoming snow birds..the book says a tow package allows the highlander to pull 5000 pounds. I reckon we will find out soon enough.
To be continued...

Hi All, went down to greencastle pa via I88 to I81. Nice road, pretty hilly and windy, lotsa good scenery. The HL gets 21 mpg. The folks at keystone rv had the r pod warmed up, leveled and the radio on. Pretty accommodating, we stayed over night and the bed was great (standard matress three inches of memory foam plus another two of regular and a down top. What can I say zzzzzzz.
Anyway the HL at 60 mph gave us 12.5 mpg :( I tried to go 55 but it was 400 miles back and was getting late, we had a antisway installed but am not sure I would have needed it. Better safe than sorry. THe car held the weight well, but I knew I had a trailer back there bigger than a Scamp. I'll try to go 55 in the future to check it out. Cheers |

tmaken2157, you said that the highlander was soft in the back, after the first trip that we took with the Jeep I replaced the rear shocks with heavy duty shocks with coil springs around them. They ride very well with the trailer hooked up and a little stiff when it is not.
That first trip was right at 3,000 miles and the Jeep already had 50,000 miles on it so I knew that the shocks would have to be replaced. Goose |

Hi goose, I believe the Toyota has struts in the rear. And unless someone out there has played around I don't know if I can do that like the jeeps can
