I would like to be able to display pictures from my iPad on a TV while out and about.
At home thatis easy cause everything is Internet connected. But on the road with no wifi and the Apple TV plugged into the HDMI port of the TV, can I still use AirPlay for displaying pictures from iPad or iPhone directly? Any body tried this?

Air Play is, I think, Bluetooth, so you should OK. Check the Apple FAQ's.

Turn on the hotspot on your iPhone and connect the AppleTV to the hotspot. Everything should work. Connect the iPad to the hotspot too and that should also work with the AppleTV.
Note: there may be some data leakage from the appleTV or iPad as they call-home to apple. It shouldn't be much, but don't download any updates (or view any streaming content) unless you've got a healthy data plan. -edit- Assuming that you've got a lightning port on your iPhone or iPad and HDMI on your TV, an HDMI adapter (http://store.apple.com/ca/product/MD826ZM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter) may also fit your bill.

Not familiar with the Apple TV, but wondering... can you watch a movie that has been downloaded on an iPad -- through the Apple TV?

We have 2 Apple TV units at home and love them. They require a wireless network or hotspot to work and to interact with our iPad, so while out camping you'd need to setup a hotspot with your phone.
RRL, yes you can watch a movie downloaded on an iPad thru the Apple TV.
Separately though, unless you really want to watch a lot of TV while you are camping you may be better off just getting a good flat screen that has multiple inputs to it and then connect directly to it. We just installed a 19" in ours that has all of the various inputs (as well as a built-in DVD player because we are huge into movies) so that we can hook up our various toys to it.

My AT&T plan did not include hotspots..so I called to price it and went froma a 3gb family plan with no phone hot spots to a 10mg three phone hot spots plan and ended up saving $50 a month. How the hell does that happen? One of the great mysteries to me is how cell phone companies price their products.
So as of Sept1 the iPad/ iPhone hot spot/ Apple TV system should work in the desert. We'll see....... And yes this should also allow us to watch episodes of the Wire that I have downloaded to the iPad while it is raining outside.
