My wife and I just bought a R-POD 172 and are trying to plan our first road trip in May or June.  We were thinking of going to Napa (2 days), the Redwoods (1 day) and down the coast on Highway 1 (2 days).  Does anyone have any good spots to camp along this route?  We are game for either dry camping or staying at a KOA type facility.

Thanks in advance for any insight you are willing to provide.

Used to spend a lot of time on Hwy 1.  It may be too late to make reservations at the state parks, as they open bookings a year in advance.  Have never stayed at a KOA.  Start calling now for reservations.  Jules Pfeifer State Park down from Monterey is fabulous.  You camp among the giant redwoods.  There is a restaurant in the area called Nepenthe.  Fantastic view of the Pacific Ocean at sunset.  A must see.  Of course the Montery Aquarium in Monterey is also a must see.  Further south you should stop in at Hearst's Castle.  Hearst's father bought 50 miles of coastline each way from their estate to the mountains, east for about a penny an acre in the 1860's.  Read about Hearst's Castle and buy tickets on line prior to setting out.  Its a very popular landmark.  Highway 1 is very narrow and since you will be travelin southbound it is a bit tricky.  Just stay slow and enjoy the vistas.  Safe Travels.

SmileSounds like a great trip. Try the koa-Monterey/Santa Cruz. Close enough to cover all Monterey Bay area in day trips. Hwy 1 from Monterey to south of Big Sur like San Simeon is hills, turns, curves, up and down, so go SLOW and enjoy the sights, WOW. Hearst Castle (San Simeon) is fun visit, There is San Simeon camp ground (state park/beach) but dry camping, they do have water, flush toilets.Outside of Monterey just off hwy 1 a ways is Laguna Seca Campground, its county but nice park with water and electricity. Number for reservations is 888-588-2267. Good Luck
