196 Jackknife sofa platform - how constructed

We are replacing our 196 jackknife sofa with a dinette.  I want to mount a table on the jackknife sofa platform.  I would imagine the edges of the platform are solid wood (to mount the sofa mechanism), then the center a foam core or honeycomb???  (Kind of like a hollow core door)

The center of the platform is the area I am wondering about, so I can use screws there.

I can't guarantee it, but I believe the platform is a solid piece, of wood or some type of laminate.  It has to be able to support people sitting on it.

I removed the jackknife sofa and also the support brackets.  They were screwed into the edge of the platform.  When knocking on the platform in the area of the brackets, it sounded more solid, thus why I said I thought there might be wood on the edge.  But after removing the bracket screws, it looks to be a layer of wood on top of some type of a foam core, throughout the whole platform, including the edges.  The screws were solidly anchored.

I am cutting the jackknife sofa in half (disassembling might be a better word) so I can turn the halves sideways and use them as the dinette seats.  That's where I am at so far.

A laminate of the 1/8" veneer as can be seen on the top of the platform, hard foam on the inside, and looks to be a bottom thin veneer of 1/8" wood with a thin layer of what looks to be perhaps fiberglass.  Down the approximate middle (from front of slider platform to the back wall) is a 7" strip of plywood.  I don't know if this is the only strip placed inside the platform.

I've also include a photo of the finished cushions that I cut from the jackknife sofa. 


Platform cutout for our legs and table to follow.
