It was a bright sunny late afternoon when Nuestro Pod arrived
at Adolph Thomae Jr County Park on the banks of the Arroyo Colorado in Arroyo City, TX. The oppressive humidity has left us for
awhile, leaving us with warm days and (for us) cool nights (65-68). We had been told that if we didn’t like the
site we were assigned we could pick out a different site, as they weren’t very
full. We did pick out a different site
and unhooked. I went to the office to
tell them and was informed the site was taken and that most of the nearby sites
were spoken for; so back to Nuestro Pod to hooked up and moved a couple of sites
to our assigned site. I am not sure what
reservations he was looking at but very few of the sites were occupied during
the weekend. No big deal. The reason we had wanted to change was the
assigned site was covered with grass, which, with the mosquitoes out in mass we
thought it better to have some packed gravel.
The back of Nuestro Pod faced the river making for a nice view.
The first thing we did once Nuesto Pod was parked, was to
use an can of outdoor mosquito spray around the area of the Pod and (for the 1st
time) R-dome. We sprayed a double dose
where the mat and R-dome would go. Set
up was uneventful even setting up the R-Dome (thanks to the forum for the spray
silicon recommendation – it worked fantastic) It only took 20 min to get it up and staked
down. Not bad for the first live setup.
The site as we found out was really great. We had shade, courtesy of some mesquite trees
on both side of the Pod. We got enough
sun during midday to dry out the heavy overnight dew. (Has anyone else
experienced water droplets on the inside roof of the R-Dome?)
The R-Dome really paid for itself this weekend. We were able to keep the mosquitoes at bay by
spaying with Raid flying insect killer a couple of times during the day and
evening. The mat floor was littered with
dead mosquitoes etc. by the end of the weekend, but we really enjoyed have
R-Dome as protection. It was great to
sit in there and watch the variety of personal fishing boats head out to the
Laguna Madre and come back. The entire coastal
area down here is huge into fishing. If
fact, the only minor downside to the park was the people coming and going to
launch their boats and fish off the night lighted fishing piers. It seemed to start about 5:00-5:30 in the
morning and we heard some coming or going about 10:00 pm.
All in all it was another great weekend of Podding. We are definitely planning on coming here
again, especially since it’s just a short 45 min drive. Below are some pictures of Nuestro Pod on the
site and of the park.
