Continuous wattage - propane:  2600 watts
Starting wattage - gasoline:        3200 watts
Starting wattage - propane:        2900 watts

I ordered this on June 17th and it was delivered June 29th. The instructions say to first fill up the oil, which I did. Then I connected the battery. I decided that I will only run this on propane unless I need to run on gasoline. I cranked it up for the initial 5 hour break in period which is to be done with a load of 50% or less. I used a combination of items initially, but then got out a 1500w ceramic block heater to use as a load bank. I finished up the initial 5 hour break-in this morning. The built-in meter helps a lot in tracking this.

Then it was time for the big test:  Would it fire up the RPod's air conditioner? If so, could I run at least the refrigerator on AC at the same time? Test conditions were that I had been running the AC on shore power. I disconnected from shore power and then connected to the generator's 30A outlet and turned the AC back on. I have the Micro-Air EasyStart installed, so I did not anticipate any difficulty starting and running the AC, even though it was a relatively warm restart on a hot day. I also found that running the refrigerator on AC at the same time was no problem. The battery was mostly charged, so the converter was only putting out a couple of amperes. I don't know how well it would work if the battery needed significant charging. That would be a question for after I have had this a while and have had a chance to test it in varying circumstances.

Initial impressions:  I like this unit. It may not be as quiet as a Honda generator or the Predator 3500, but it is quieter than the Generac iX2000 which I have been using. It has one big advantage which is that it is dual-fuel which allows some flexibility in finding fuel for it. This Firman generator does not have a remote start, but electric start is very nice and works well. I saw a gasoline only model that did come with a remote, but I wanted this model because I wanted to run it on propane.

It is about 40 lbs heavier than the Generac iX2000, but it does come with wheels that are of a large enough diameter than they should work well on most surfaces. The handle folds down out of the way when it isn't needed. The generator has lifting handles on each end. Plan on having someone to help lift it or some way such as a hoist or ramp to load it as it is heavy. It did not come with a cover, but one is available. Plan on ordering the cover from Amazon because Firman's shipping charge for the cover is rather steep.

I think I will be pleased with this. It seems to be quite well made and the fact that it is RV ready is a plus since there are no weird adapters needed. By running on propane, I should avoid any fuel-related issues and it should last a long time. Firman recommends 10W30 oil but also specifies 5W30 full-synthetic oil can be used. The first oil change is at 25 hours. Afterward, it is 100 hours or annually, whichever comes first. This will serve as a back-up generator at home for those times when the power goes out. It should be able to keep our refrigerator and freezer running (with cords since I don't want to install a transfer switch).

What? No video of it running?

lol...anyway, thanks...I'm down from 5 generators to 4...I'm sure I will be shopping for a new one to replace it...in fact I'm hoping to have 6 generators by years end...I hear some folks have less than 3...which I cannot fathom...

podwerks, if you run your genny on propane then you only need one, because it will actually start when you need it to, unlike the gummed up and ethanol contaminated gasoline ones...LOL

They do use a lot of propane though, I used up a whole 20 lb cylinder in a day running the a/c and that was partial daytime use only. keeping cool can get very pricey especially if you're somewhere where you have to swap cylinders rather than refill.

For that reason StephenH I assume you are only running the fridge on AC for testing purposes?  You will use about 3x more propane running the fridge on a propane genny than if you ran it on propane directly.

Yes, I was only using it for testing. For actual use, I would be running the refrigerator on propane as well as the water heater.

With my Generac iX2000, I only purchased non-ethanol gasoline to use with it and I always added Sta-Bil gasoline stabilizer to the gasoline. I have had no problems with the generator (or my mower or my other small engines). I may be selling the iX2000 to my neighbor.

There are many places where you can't get ethanol fee gas. As an alternative you can try cutting off the fuel supply and running the engine out of gas rather than shutting it off, and dump any left over gas in your car and buy fresh at least monthly. Before I did that on my sailboat my outboard motor had the annoying habit of cutting out just as I reached the harbor entrance where all the traffic was and surf was usually breaking. Not good.

Running small engines on propane solves all these problems, but costs more.

It can be hard to find ethanol-free gasoline, especially when traveling, but I don't use anything else in my small engines.  I learned the hard way.  And I've found that it's almost always available somewhere nearby; it can just be a question of finding it.

Anyway, thanks for the review Stephen.  I have another model Firman that I've been very happy with around the house, although I wouldn't want to take it camping because of the noise level.  Also, I noticed last time we had a power outage that it was outputting something like 100 volts according to it's own meter.  I didn't check it, but it concerned me.  It was powering a fridge and a freezer, which seemed to run alright....

Try finding ethanol free gas in CA sometime...

If you want to live dangerously you can remove the ethanol by adding water to the gas and mixing aggressively, then letting it stand overnight. The ethanol is more miscible in water than gas so it will end up in the bottom of the gas container mixed with the water. That's the easy part, but then you have to get all the water out or you've made things worse, and you have to safely dispose of the waste water/ethanol/gas mess you're left with. Start with premium gas as the octane rating is reduced by the removal of ethanol.

Propane solves all the above problems, and others. Battery powered lawn and garden equipment is even better. No gasoline powered small engines around here. Thumbs Up

It seems like in many places ethanol gasoline is getting easier to find although it is almost always mid-grade (90 octane) or premium (93 octane) and thus, more expensive. It is certainly less expensive than buying quart cans of ethanol free fuel in the big-box hardware store, but I would not want to carry a case of those around. Propane makes the best sense for my intended use.
