Last year, this forum gave my family the best trip we have EVER had! (chaco canyon, ghost towns of CO, the gorgeous drive through Gunnison, to name just 3). I am eternally grateful. This year, my daughter has friends in PA. I've got my r-pod and 10 days free (late june/early july), and absolutely no clue whatsoever what to do with them. I know NOTHING about anything as far as where to stop and what to do (the only place we "must" stop is near Hershey to visit one person, and then near Philly to visit another person). Traveling with young-adult daughter. Her favorite thing to do in all the world is rent a motor-boat from a marina, any kind of marina, any kind of body of water. we love nature, ghost towns, dark skies, odd-ball places, animals, famous or impressive natural wonders, kayaking rivers (rental), exploring ruins, 'off the path' remarkable stops, etc For example, last year we went deep into Chaco Canyon, then rented a jeep to reach those hard to see ghost towns way up in the CO mountains. But we also appreciate little kayaking day trips at campgrounds, and of course, every chance I can find I rent a speedboat: especially if the place will rent it out overnight and the body of water has lots of little places to boat TO, park the boat, get out and look around). Any ideas would be truly appreciated! |

Well, good to finally hear back from you! Glad your trip last year was successful. If you're starting in St. Louis, you probably don't want to do anything in St. Louis.... but there's plenty to do there, and right outside, on the Illinois side of the river are the Cahokia Mounds, which are pretty impressive. About the only other places I can think of along the way are the Zane Grey Museum, near Norwich, OH. It really helps if you're into Zane Grey a little bit... Coleman's Fish in Wheeling. The site of the Johnstown Flood. Gettysburg. Valley Forge. A million things in Philadelphia; dark sky related, there's a great planetarium in the Franklin Museum, which is otherwise really good and it's right down the street from the Rocky steps. The Jersey Shore. Lucy in Margate is an icon of my youth, right ouside of Atlantic City. The AC Boardwalk can be pretty interesting. That's off the top of my head. I'm sure others can add a lot of other suggestions. I was really hoping for Chaco Canyon report.... TT

I forgot to mention, you can rent a small motor boat at Ray Scott's Dock in Margate, NJ, on the sound side of the island, along with fishing and/or crabbing gear and fish for flounder or crabs. TT
