Anyone been to Fort Pickens Campground near Pensacola, FL, in the Gulf Islands National Seashore?  I'd be interested in any feedback, especially, but not limited to after Michael.

It is not bad, but my wife and I prefer Gulf State Park just down the road about 45 minutes.

We are also planning to go to the gulf area in late February.

Please be more specific about why you like Gulf State park it looks promising but it seems awfully big. We are considering Fort Pickens and Big Lagoon SP in Florida, we like hiking trails and I hope to catch some red spotted drum (rave on).

We were there during a cold, rainy spell, so it could have been better for us. It got into the 30's... We were in the CDEF.. loop, which gets pretty saturated and flooded with not a lot of rain.  Naturally, Loop A has the shade and a little bit of topography...  There are nice hot showers, laundry areas, trails, great beaches.  The fort is pretty amazing.  It's a bit of a ride into Pensacola -- we like to eat out about once a day.  It's not too far....

The beaches and the fort are not pet friendly.  There are dog parks though.

It was my first time there -- I might feel better about it if/when I learn my way around better.  We were there just over a week which was a little too long this time.
