When winterizing you remove the anode rod to drain the WH, do you replace the rod or leave it out until you de-winterize it. I was told to leave it out.

I always put it back in.. but that's because the first year.. I "lost"it.. found it the next day.. after going to the RV place and buying a new one.. LOL

I had placed it in the pass through storage and it had rolled back and under the door flange/frame.

I leave it in as well, because i didn't want to do what fur did lol. Once I remove the anode, I give it a good  washing out with the hose, the tank gets filled with white flakey stuff, I assume it's calcium.

I also drain the tank, rinse the tank out and then put the anode rod back in.

I leave mine out. I have an old rod with no element and I use it to cap the WH. I have all my RV stuff on one shelf in my building and have never lost anything. I do that because I'm going to rinse the tank again at start of season and I like to start fresh, with new tape on the rod and clean the threads once.

I usually put it back in, probably because I'm paranoid about little critters finding their way into the tank and making it their little home for the winter... I know, I'm over thinking it but it makes me feel better! :-)
In any case I usually remove it to flush the tank in the spring anyhow

It's a good idea to plug the hole up securely, whether with the anode rod, a wine cork, anything that keeps the creepy-crawlies out.  They can clog up the plumbing.  The good thing is they are often high in protein.

It's simple enough after winterizing to put the rod back loosely in the hole, then come spring time, take it out, rinse out the tank, and replace it with teflon tape snd such for a new season.  Putting it somewhere else, at least if you are like me, runs the risk of forgetting that special place where you safeguarded it to use next season.

I am like you Fred.  Put rod back loosely in the hole.  Then rinse in spring and new teflon tape.  I hate to lose stuff and then find it 3 months later in that special 'hiding spot.'

I just hand tighten to cover the hole... Rinse in spring and then reinstall.
