Topic: power converter 12V Posted: 30 Aug 2018 at 6:57am |
In normal operation with shore power connected does the converter have a step down transformer that runs the 12V accessories (lights, fan, ect.)or does it only charge the battery?

It provides 12v to the entire 12v system. Some systems will not operate, on some pods, if there is no battery installed, and the converter is providing power, mostly, just the slide. It draws so many instant amps that without a battery to buffer the load, it errors out.

So when the converter dies as is common, do you lose ALL 12v, or just battery charging capability? I ask because my battery is not charging from shore power, but I have all my 12v systems intact.

The 12 volt appliances will continue to operate until the battery is discharged. However, there are a pair of higher amperage fuses that protect the converter from a reversed battery connection. They will blow if the battery is ever connected reversed, even for an instant. Check these fuses. The converter may be OK.

I don't know that it's all that common. That said, your 12V systems will continue to operate as long as there is juice in your battery(ies). You might want to check fuses first.

Good reason IMO for having a battery charger with the pod. Considering that I have 3 of them around the house and they all cost less than half of that "Converter" if and when mine dies I'm not positive I'll replace it.

+1 Ghosthawk
A battery charger is great back up to a fried converter as I found out on a month trip we took this summer in my pod and even better its quick fix! I was able to finish the last week and half of our trip without having to worry by just using the battery charger. I considered a must carry even though I now have WFCO converter to swap out if the Power Dynamics converter I installed dies.
