Just back from Hope Valley, CA.  Super nice campground, but it's very popular so make reservations early.  Here's a view from the campground:

The good thing is that it's about an hour from our house and we used just a little over a quarter of a tank of gas round trip.  The bad thing is that this place is very popular and it's often full.  But there are others in the same general area, though many are just opening for the season due to snow.
