My wife and I went on our first camping trip with our newly acquired 2010 171.  We travelled 2740 miles total from Central Massachusetts and headed to Nashville (Seven Points Campground) and then via Chattanooga to Moonshine Creek in NC.  Our very first night was in a Walmart parking lot in Martinsburg, WV which went very well and we visited the cleanest Walmart I have ever seen.  Next night was at Hungry Mothers' State Park which was a very nice full hook up. Next two nights were at a waterfront back-in site with electric and water at Seven Points (an Army Corps of Engineers Campground) which was peaceful and beautiful. The next three nights were spent at Moonshine Creek in Balsam NC, a very nice campground with full amenities.  The shower/bath/laundry area was beautiful and the staff was most helpful. After spending two full days exploring the Great Smoky Mountains NP, it was time to head home.  We stayed a night at Sherando Family Recreation Area in Virginia a quiet site with electric and saw our second R-Pod of our trip.  The fellow R-Pod campers were nice enough to share some tips from their experiences of part time travel over the last three years.

Our first trip was a success without any real issues.  A few small things to adjust before our next trip in two weeks to Cape Cod.  We have the forum to thank for all the great advice and posts which made our preparation successful.

It sounds like a wonderful trip. Glad you got to do it!

I really like the Smoky Mts. and have been going there for decades.

99% of the time, these trailers do exactly what they are supposed to do and traveling in them is fun. You may read of problems here but, that is what this forum is known for - help/assistance with issues or just plain old questions.

David, would love to know which camp grounds in the Smoky Mountains you recommend. We are going that way after seeing family in Louisville, Ky.

My personal favorite is Cosby:

Cosby linky

It is in the NE area of the park and away from the hubbub of Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge (about 30-40 mins away). Also, it not near as busy as some of the other campgrounds.

I recommend reservations as there are few RV sites. It is about 95% tent camping.

David,
Thank you for the words of encouragement.  We are thrilled with the R Pod.  I spent a few months in preparation for the trip performing overdue maintenance and modifications based on suggestions from the forum (window in door, dual 6 volt batteries, custom battery box with switch, led bulbs throughout, Goodyear Endurance tires, new microwave, vinyl plank floor...).  We have 4 trips planned over the next few months for a total of 14 nights and a longer trip to Florida including four nights at Fort Wilderness for a total of 17 nights next February.
I can see why other owners enjoyed their R-Pods and share their experiences and expertise.
