Thanks for the uTube. I just picked up my new 2018 179. I drove 150 miles home in a rain and windstorm, and it was my first time towing. I suspect it was the first of many adventures. It handled great once I got used to the movement on the back of my 2012 Highlander. Now I am going to teach myself how to back it up. Should be another interesting day/adventure.
Meantime I plan to camp in it in the driveway to see what I need next and make sure I know how everything works. The forum has been great for this as well. I have appreciated all of the posts and ideas. It helped me decide which brand and model to buy. You all have been very helpful. The first real trip(s) is camping over the summer with 2 grandkids at a time to celebrate their birthdays. Should be fun. They are looking forward to it (especially when I drove up with the camper!). So any advice to the newbie is appreciated! |

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new Pod! You seem to be "on top of it" as, you are going to do 2 things that I would have recommended: (1) A "test driveway camp" and (2) practice backing up. Please ask away with anything that comes up. We have some very smart/experienced and friendly folks here.......and they LIKE to help. |

A school parking lot on Sunday is a good backup practice field. Also practice with your partner for hand signals and positioning. There is no excuse for a backing accident if there are two people.

I "trained" my wife in what hand signals to use. For left or right, use 1 finger (or multiple) pointing in that direction....and not what my crazy brother does. He spins his fingers/hand in a circular motion as if to tell me how to turn the steering wheel. But looking in a mirror at him, I can't tell what direction he's spinning or if he's even correct....confusing.
Also, when determining when to stop, I (and wife) use 2 hands held apart at a distance equal to the distance to back up....in other words if she wants me to back up another 18", she holds her hands 18" apart and decreases that distance as the trailer (or truck) gets closer to the point. That way, I know how close I am and start slowing down. No hand waving, then the sudden "stop" signal...eliminates the reaction time. This system works for us..... And looking on the web, it is the "proper" hand signal system.....diagrams and videos!
