Topic: Advice requested Posted: 12 Mar 2018 at 12:13pm |
I am starting to plan the late summer travel adventure. We are planning to leave from southern NM and go to Wisconsin. Current plans are to cross into Canada, travel across to New York state, then to North Carolina (to see relatives) before we arrive at the mini mini rally in Kentucky. Then we will come home.
My dear wife has never seen the fall foliage colors and very much would like to see then. As the rally starts 10 October , I am wondering if the leave will have turned by then. I realize that this depends upon the weather but what is "normal?"

The leaves will start changing colors in northern Vermont by late august and will continue through Sept and October . I imagine upstate New York will be similar.

We usually head to Cape Hatteras for the month of October, So when we head out near the end of September there is a lot of color all along Interstate 91 from the Canadian border through Massachusetts. Interstate 87 runs parallel on the New York side

When you're traveling through Canada to New York state and then to North Carolina, maybe cross into New York either at I81 near Wellesley Island or at Cornwall and then drive down through the Adirondacks. You should see some great color and there are several places to stay at.
Sounds like a great trip.

October there may be some color here at the mini, but mid Oct is probably just before the peak.. weather is always a factor. Early muzzle loader season is late Oct, and I often love that weekend just for the foliage, as much as for the stocking of the freezer..

If you plan on crossing the U.P. of Michigan en route to Canada from Wisconsin the colors will normally peak between mid and the 3rd week of September in the western portion of the Upper Peninsula. Northern lower peninsula of Michigan normally peaks between October 5 - 15.

I am a librarian so I looked this up for you. Hope it helps
Experience regional variations when it comes to fall foliage on the East Coast. The northern reaches of Maine see colors beginning to change in September, while Vermont, New Hampshire and northern New York peak in early October. Massachusetts and southern New York usually peak in mid-October, while the Washington D.C. area and Virginia are aflame in late October. Visitors to the Carolinas will see colors from late October to early November, and farther south, in Georgia, you'll have to wait until early November.

I am a North Carolina native. The mountains are usually spectacular around that time. Don't forget to visit the Great Smoky Mountains if you get a chance.
