Hi everyone
Anyone out there towing there RPod 177 (2014) with a Volvo XC60 SUV? The towing capacity is 3500# so it should have the ability to handle the towing but just wanted to hear from anyone that may already be towing with this vehicle. I don't need the room (or expense) of the XC 90 but would consider if the XC 60 isn't adequate.
Thanks so much!

You will get a lot of varying opinion on whether or not that is an adequate tow capacity. I would rather NOT have a 3500 pound capacity T.V. if I had a choice. Your tow vehicle capacity in reality should be no less than 80% of the max cargo weight of your T.T. Judging the weight of a T.T. by using the dry weight, is almost a dirty trick in my opinion. Sure, you can pull this camper, but, you cant bring anything with you. I would fear having this set up if I got into an accident. You will almost surely be deemed overweight. If god forbid there were serious injury, who knows what will happen.

+2. Similar opinion. 3500# TV is too close to the edge. Could it do it? Probably. Would it be fun? Probably not.

If Volvo says 3500 lbs capacity, I would tend to believe them and use that as a guide. The company is known for their emphasis on safety and I wouldn't think that they'd game the towing figures. The 177 isn't the heaviest r-pod (that's why we got ours) and you should be well under the limit. One reason we buy r-pods is that they're light and can be towed with SUV's and don't require pickup trucks.

That said, there are other factors that should be weighed. First is your Gross Vehicle Weight. You're probably in the range where you can load your vehicle with about 1000 - 1100 lbs. You'll have to find this number (look on your door frame). This includes your passengers, cargo, and the weight of the trailer. Add it up. If it's just you, a partner, and a small cat, there shouldn't be a problem. If you've got a family of four with two teenagers and an overweight golden retriever, then you might be pushing the weight limit of the car.

Another factor is where you are going. Flat lands, Rockies, 10,000 mile trips, or just local camping. Be reasonable in your loading and your speed (55-60) and you should do fine.

+4  Wouldn't feel very safe with the points mjlrpod and glueguy make.  If you just plan on going down the road a bit on relatively flat roads, probably not a problem.  But going down the highway at 50+ mph and if someone who is not paying attention to their driving, but playing on their phone swerves in front of you, are you going to be able to safely avoid a serious encounter?  Same goes for animals, even with our Explorer, we have had to make some seriously hard brakes for bear, deer, antelope and elk over the past 7 years hauling our 177.  Don't forget how precious your cargo is, include your spouse, kids, grandkids, dogs, or cats you may be traveling with.

Thank you for all of the feedback. Decided against being so close to the line on the towing capacity. Seems like a bad/potentially unsafe choice. The search for a vehicle continues!

Peace of mind is important so good luck with your search.

Here's how they come up with those standards for cars and trucks:

http://fifthwheelst.com/SAE-J2807-Tow-Tests.html

or search for SAE J2807
