Topic: gREAT TRIP!! Posted: 24 Jun 2017 at 12:22pm |
Dar and I (with Boris and Betty) got home last night from a three week Pod trip. We went from our home in Wisconsin to my Brothers home in California, spending time along the way at Rocky Mountain National Park, The Grand Tetons National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Devils Tower National Monument, and Badlands National Park. We crossed the Rockies twice and the Sierra Nevada Mountains twice, spent lots of interstate miles at 70 MPH, had absolutely no problems with Pod or truck and got 11.3 MPG average.
The best campsite we had was a riverside site in Gros Ventre campgrounds (Grand Tetons). We stayed there 12 years ago and loved it then. Wooded sites and the sound of the river in the background. Other than camping at my Brothers yard which was great also the rest of the nights were in RV Parks that were unremarkable. Two that stand out are the KOA at Devils Tower (come out of the camper and see the tower in the morning!!) and in Sydney, Nebraska Cabela's RV park next to their flagship store.
We used all the systems on our Pod, Air, furnace, pump, fridge on electric and propane, lights, head, shower, sink. They all worked well. We had all kinds of weather (except snow) while towing and even without WDH or sway bars it pulled beautifully. We did sit on the edge of the Great Salt Lake in Utah for a couple of hours stopped by the police due to high winds. When we did get going we passed 5 semi trucks blown over by the cross winds, so we were grateful they were stopping campers. The driver of the class C in front of us had a tantrum the whole time we waited and let the cops know what he thought of them. I thanked the Utah State Police for thinking of our safety.
We saw R Pods every day while on the road, and several in campgrounds but never met any other owners. There are getting to be more and more all the time.
So we have spent a month in our pod since I retired in Mid April. We have more camping planned for the rest of the season this year and will get our money's worth now.

That is a lot of acreage covered; glad to hear you covered it safely and were able to experience some of the created beauty out west. We look forward to RMNP in Colorado this September for a couple weeks. For us, being on a schedule (because I still have a full time job)visiting one National Park at a time is all we can manage. Hooray for you both, continue to enjoy what this great land has to offer and please keep us updated. Thanks!

Congratulations on retirement! It sounds like you had a really nice trip. You got me thinking about returning to the Rocky Mts. NP. I looked online and couldn't put much of a stay together (this year) at the Aspenglen campground, that I camped at before. Maybe next year.....

The last time we camped in RMNP all camping was first come first served. We camped in Aspenglen next to the Big Thompson River. Imagine my surprise this year when I got there and found out all sites were reserveable and the park was full. We stayed at Elk Meadows, an RV Park near one of the entrances, and spent most of our stay in the park. It was OK, but next time will reserve time in the park.

What we have done for the past 3 times we have gone to RMNP (beginning in 2011) was to reserve 6 months ahead to get the sites we want at Moraine. Maybe because it is September and many wish to go at that time because the elk are in the rut and many like to watch/photo the event.

I have been there in September/October for the Elk and it is spectacular. Moraine is the campground for elk watching.
