I understand the need for surge protection in campgrounds. I protect my computers at home with surge protection. Do I need to spend twice as much for the added protection against surge failure, misfired pedestal indicator,over/under voltage, open neutral protection, reverse polarity, etc? Is this overkill or a reasonable purchase.

Short answer is yes you do. The TRC SurgeGuard and Progressive EMS will not connect the RV if power is not good and will automatically disconnect if faults develop. They will also shut down the RV if voltage goes high or low. Low voltage is a common problem at CGs during the summer when everyone is using A/C and will damage your A/C if it continues. Simple surge protectors offer very limited protection against momentary surges such as nearby lightening strikes.
