Hi Folks,

I'm looking at retiring in an R-Pod in the not too distant future. I've been doing my due diligence, looking at and researching a lot of different floor plans and models of small TTs, and keep coming back to the R-Pods. Vaccilating between the 179 and 180.

Anyway, one of the things I absolutely need is reliability and straightforward ease of use. I can take care of myself, and read a manual (or an owner's forum :-)) and do small repairs and such, but I'm counting on everything working.  I can't be climbing under a Pod to make sure the black tank is properly attached. 

I'll be traveling alone except for a few critters. Some time will be spent in campgrounds, but I'll be boondocking a lot as well.

So I've gotten some wonderful ideas and tips from reading this forum, but I'm getting a little concerned about a Pod holding up under constant use, and some of the fairly complicated repairs they seem to need. I can't do those, which will mean having to pay to have them done. 

Is an R-Pod for me, or am I biting off more than I can chew?  I've never owned a camper before.  This seems right in terms of price and size and having all the amenities I need.

It isn't as if spending a bunch more on a different brand of TT would necessarily get you something better. What is worth doing is take notes of problems people have noted and if you get one, be sure you go over those areas with your dealer before accepting delivery. The R-Pod, at its price point, can't be beat.

We spent 5 continuous months in "Shore Leave."  We took her over some of the roughest roads you can imagine.  We only had one minor problem and that was easily fixed on the road.  The Pod is a lightly built trailer.  It is no more poorly built than many of the other small, light trailers on the market.  Maintenance and repair are facts of life whether you live in a house or in a trailer.  Buy a couple of handyman, how-to books on plumbing, electrical and mechanical repairs.  Most of the problems that you are likely to encounter are easily fixed with a minimum of experience.  Just use common sense.

Very good advise!! The key is what StephenH said about doing a very detailed walk thru to make sure you are not starting off with problems. Also I would video as the tech demonstrates every piece of equipment and set up. Have him demonstrate the a/c operation, entertainment center etc. Then you can play it back later if you forget the details.

Just out of curiosity, what complicated repairs have you read about? Who maintains your home now?

Hi Furpod,

Well, a few threads here and there having to do with electricity and wiring, but the biggie was the black tank falling out thread.  :-)

I handle normal care and maintenance at my place, with the exception of the electrical.  I can flip a breaker switch and that's about it. 

But my daddy was a carpenter, so I know a few things.  For the big stuff, I have my brother-in-law to advise me, or I pay a neighborhood handyman guy.

Thanks for talking me down off the ledge.  You're right, this is a good choice for me, I can do this, with some "How-To For Dummies" manuals and this forum.  And the idea of videoing the walk-through is great. 

I'm 4'9 with 6 fingers, and some things are beyond my ability, but most aren't, given time to figure out how to do it or how to make the tool to help me do it.

There are somewhere around 20 thousand pods out there.. so far, the odds are PRETTY good your black tank won't fall off.. LOL

Really, people come here when they need help. Very few owners join just to start a thread about how good the pod is. Most of the electrical discussion here revolves around modifying etc, occasionally there are electrical issues.. just like at home.

You will be fine.

Hello.  I agree completely with Furpod.  Although a few owners have experienced problems, they are in a minority.  Like anything else, most of us in the silent majority and don't post when all is well.  Not to say a small problem can occur, but mostly common sense and at worst an email here will bring you more experienced help than many dealers have.  Good luck, enjoy your retirement and your Pod.  Safe Travels.
