My question is this: where should the emergency brake cable on the pod be hooked? If there's too much slack it may not set the brakes if the trailer was to come off the hitch. Should it be run through the chain links?

Mine was laced through the chain links. If it is too tight, it might get pulled when it doesn't need to be, and then the trailer brakes would lock up with no need to do so. I'm guessing the way they were done is the best compromise between too tight and too loose.
