Okay Folks

All of you have been most helpful with tons of info, and my wife and I have finally decided to go with the 179.

That said, I will be headed to the dealer within the next 10 days.

I believe the Rpod comes with 1 - battery?

That said we will hope to be doing quite a few 1 - week trips this summer and I do own a 2000 watt Yamaha generator.

My question is when I am negotiating the deal with my dealer I would think I should upgrade to a better battery and possibly opt for 2 - batteries?

Your opinions will be appreciated.
Thanks
Patriot Dave

The typical dealer supplied battery is a single 12V Group 24 battery. At best it's rated at 70-80 Amp Hours. By all means negotiate for two 6V Golf Cart batteries. They will be rated at ~220 AH or about three times the original. You should be able to negotiate some credit since the original battery was included in the price you signed up for.

Depends. Are you planning on doing a lot of 'dry' camping or will most of your time be spent where electrical power is available? If it is the first, go for the battery upgrade. If the second, then your money might be better spent on other upgrades.

I opted to purchase two 6V batteries and a cable to hook them up in series along with two battery boxes suitable for 6V batteries. The batteries I purchased at Batteries & Bulbs. The boxes were purchased online. I picked up the cable at an auto parts store. By doing so, and by installing the batteries myself, I got a store credit that we used to purchase some accessories. If I had the dealer install them even though I had provided them, it would have cost me. It worked out well doing it my way. Smile

Stephen, am curious as to how much the 2 6v batteries set you back.  As I have posted elsewhere I got 2 12 v back in March of 2011 when we took delivery of our 177.  I will go 4 days on one battery before switching to the other.  I switch when the charge is down to 1/3 of full.  4 days is the shortest interval we have had so far on our battery before having to switch and that was when we were in Glacier NP in 2012 in September with night temps between 36 - 45 degrees so the furnace was getting a pretty good workout.  Fridge and hot water were running on propane and our lights were all switched over to l.e.d.'s  So here commence on our 6th years with the same 12 v batteries and they still appear to be in great condition.

Now that is good info and I think you had mentioned that to me before.

I have asked for so much info and some of it is running together.............Old Guy Syndrome!

I too will be interested in the 6 volt costs.

What class are your batteries?

Another question,

What do you use to charge them with and how long does it take?

Thanks

Okay. I'll try to answer all the questions.

Cost:  I purchased two batteries. See link below. This plus sales tax but I had a 10% military discount. There is a 10% online purchase coupon available.

http://www.batteriesplus.com/productdetails/sligc110

There are higher capacity batteries also available. The ones I purchased are rated at 215 AH at 20 hour rate. The others range up to 255 AH at 20 hour rate. All are GC2 batteries.

Edit:  I wired the two batteries in series (Positive of one 6V battery to negative of the other 6V battery with leads to the trailer running from the other terminals). This is so that I still get 12V power for the R-Pod.

I charge them with the standard R-Pod system when plugged in or with the TV while towing. As for charge time, I can't say since I have not tried to time it.

Jato:  I am surprised that you did not wire them in parallel (positive to positive and negative to negative on both batteries). It seems that would work better than swapping the connections. Or do you have a two-way battery switch that you use?

StephenH.  I am not real bright in the electrical department and I know that I could wire 2  6v in series as you mentioned above but in the case of 12 v batteries (which is what I have) I didn't know you could wire them in parallel w/o frying a circuit board.  Isn't that what would happen or am I out to lunch on this?  I do not have a two-way battery switch.
