The family (me, wife & 2 Yorkies) are heading from our home in southwestern Virginia to Grand Canyon in our 178.  Planning to stop along the way as needed (rest areas, Walmarts, etc.).  We have reservations at Trailer Village RV Park.  I'm planning to do some hiking there.  Coming home we're staying a few nights near Santa Fe at Trailer Village RV Resort.  This forum has been a great resource for some trips I have made but this is the first trip for the whole "family".   Wish us good luck and feel free to offer any suggestions you may have.

Definitely a great place to visit.  Make sure to go to the North Rim, it is remote, and most visitors don't go there because of that BUT  it is even more magnificent then the south rim where most people go.  At the north rim you are right at the edge of the canyon and the hiking trails there are spectacular!
We wish to visit again, even though we have been there a few times, to go on the raft ride on the Colorado River through the canyon put on by Creation Research.  A lot of evidence for creation can be observed on this trip.

We prefer the North Rim also but just be aware that it doesn't open until May 15th.  If you are going that far I would also recommend that you consider hitting Zion and Bryce National Parks in Utah.  They are just a few hours drive from the North Rim turnoff at Jacob's Lake.  All three are spectacular in their own unique ways.  Well worth making the cycle.

When we were out to the Grand Canyon last fall we also dropped a little south and checked out Montezuma's Well and Montezuma's Castle along with (I'm going to butcher this) Tessagoot  (sp?) National Monuments. All small cliff dwellings.

If you like barbecued ribs check out the barbecue place in downtown Williams AZ on Route 66. Great ribs. Williams is south of the Grand Canyon on old Route 66, off I 40 near the Jct of Hwy 64 that runs up to Grand Canyon. Supposedly the last section of Route 66 to be bypassed by I 40.
If you like airplanes there is the Planes of Fame museum half way up Hwy 64 to the Grand Canyon.

On the same trip on our way out we went through Zion, (the main part) and also Zion Kalob over on I 15 on our way to Vegas.  A few years ago we stayed near Bryce Canyon Nat Park too. If you go anywhere near there take a ride on "Scenic Hwy 12". Hwy 12 is a great ride but would not be as much fun with a trailer. Wink  Lots of stuff to see in southern Utah too but the Colorado River makes it a long drive around. Smile

Agree - Also be prepared for snow showers. It can get cold in mid-May.

Yes, we did experience that in mid-May many years ago.  Tried it again in mid-September, much warmer, at least the year we went, regardless of that, it is a sight you never forget once you've been there.  Well worth the extra drive.

I'm located in Abingdon.

I've camped with my pod at VIR not too far from you and I love going there for car and motorcycle races!
