I'm thinking about modifying the queen size bed area in my R-pod 179. I'm a single camper with a dog. I don't use all of the queen size mattress to sleep in.

This is my idea:
1.) Cut the wood under bed in half.
2.) Hinge both pieces together or slide one under other.
3.) Buy two single mattress 4" thick.
4.) Stack one mattress on top of other.
5.) Cut wood pieces to cover the furnace and outside area opening inside trailer
6.) Use collapsible and removable storage in open area.
7.) Remove storage, slide wood out, separate mattress to make queen size bed if needed

Does anyone have an opinion on if it will work or not?

I think it will  work-   but be sure to look under where the two "new" storage compartments are.
The left side has the heater, water pump and water heater in there.
The right side has most of it already taken up by the outside storage compartment, although there is a small space that is unused, in mine anyway.   FR is a little haphazard where they actually wall stuff off.

So you may not get all the space you want- but I don't see any harm in doing it.

We did a similar mod to our 173. we removed the jack knife sofa and built a frame ,2  plywood panels and 2 single foam mattresses that made into a queen bed.  You can see pictures in our "Mods" section of our signature.  We essentially built a framework around the 2 interior side walls and the rear end wall.  I made 2 pieces of plywood that were the size of a single mattress.  These could stack along with 2 single sized 4" foam mattresses.   One piece of plywood would be on top with 2 foam mattresses as a sandwich between the top and bottom plywood pieces. when not used as a bed, this created a long plywood top that we used as an additional kitchen counter top.  when we are ready to convert it to a bed, we simply pull the top plywood down onto the frame, separate the mattress parts and we have a queen bed. It has worked great for us on multi-week cross country tips.

I hope this description and the pictures will help-if not, I can explain more.

Thanks, Budward and Vann for the advice. Going to draw everything Autocad, get exactly how I want it. Measure twice, cut once! Will post pics of mod when finished.
