Green River - Wyoming

We live in Green River. There are so many areas just like you describe, but our favorite is actually over the Wyoming border into Utah. We've been camping there for 35 years, and our children, when they were young, loved the area. We still have family reunions there. It's called Deep Creek. Dry camping, isolated but very safe, more stars than you can imagine. The Gorge, Brownie Lake, Spirit Lake, Sheep Creek Lake, the Sheep Creek loop...so much to see and do. Don't know where you're coming from, but assuming you're coming off of I-80 take either Green River exit and go to highway 530. You'll be paralleling Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Right over the Wyoming border, you'll go through Manila, UT. At the far edge of town there's a forest service visitor center at the corner of 530 and 191. You'll turn left onto 191 and keep going (probably a 20 minute drive) until you reach Sheep Creek Canyon Geological Loop - a must-see, but keep going on 191. Another 15 minutes down the road you'll be at the top of the Sheep Creek Loop, but don't turn there. Go another 10 minutes or so and you'll SUDDENLY come upon a sign on the right that says Deep Creek. It's a dirt road, and that's where you want to turn. You can camp anywhere along that road, as close to the main road or all the way back in the designated campground called Deep Creek (but we never stay there). There are big rock fire pits, very few other campers, and many choices of places to camp (huge areas where you can fit lots of tents, too). BREATHTAKING!!! About 1 1/2 hrs. from GR.

We have camped at Flaming Gorge many times.  My favorites are either the KOA in Manila or a small forrest service campground near the visitors center.  Can't remember the name, but it is right on the rim overlooking the gorge.  Beautiful spot, very small campground with alot of space between sites.

There are many National Forest Service campgrounds in Utah between Manila and Vernal. They get very crowded in the summer but are very pretty. The one referred to above is called Green's Lake. It is right at Red Canyon Lodge and the Red Canyon Overlook Visitor Center. The area I mentioned to you is 10 miles before Red Canyon if you're coming from Green River. The restaurant at Red Canyon Lodge is fabulous. There are also two marinas on the Wyoming side - Buckboard, which is very party-oriented for the boaters, and Lucerne - right on the Wyoming-Utah border. Both of these are right on the Gorge. The KOA in Manila is very nice if you want that type of experience.
