We got back from our 2nd trip in Podimus. We spent Friday - Monday at Palmetto SP near Gonzales, Tx. Oh my goodness! The weather couldn't have been more perfect. Sunny with a high temp of 70 and cold nights. The type of weather when I find my groove! We did some trail riding/walking and a little fishing (very little since they weren't biting). We camped with our friends who just finished building their own camper - their maiden voyage.
Now about the park. It is a small park in reference to the amount of camp spots, but it is spread out and good sized. The campsites are roomy, but a lot are not level. We didn't have trouble leveling our Pod tho. Very quiet and relaxing. The park is far off any busy roads. And since there was no moon it was awesomely dark with good star gazing. I would imagine that the star gazing would be difficult when the trees have foliage as there are many trees and they provide almost complete shade in other seasons. All the structures in the park were built by the CCC back in the 30's and 40's (guessing the time frame). Very interesting construction and quite gorgeous in a historical way. The palmettos are so out of place in Texas they make you feel like a dinosaur is going to come lumbering out of them any second. An intriguingly interesting place. This is a link to some phone pics that I took. Forgot our cameras! Argh! https://www.flickr.com/photos/119235407@N08/sets/72157649972759620/ |

Good deal! Yes we like Palmetto for the quick weekend get away because of it's close proximity and easy access. The park is located just about 5 miles off Hwy 10, real easy to get to. The bonus of camping at Palmetto is stopping at BUC-EES

Oh, yes! How could I have forgotten Bucee's! Even tho we have one in our hometown of New Braunfels we still had to stop. Just as amazing and crowded as ever. And I agree, if you are near one, you should stop - it's an experience.

Maybe you can make it to the BIG TEXAS RALLY and stop at BUC-KEES on the way!!! Alright, Alright, Alright
![]() As a reminder to all of are other camper friends. This event is OPEN to all campers. At Tyler State Park you can boat, fish, swim in the lake, mountain bike, picnic, geocache, camp, bird watch and study nature. Explore the Pineywoods on more than 13 miles of trails. Don’t miss the Whispering Pines Nature Trail, laid out more than 70 years ago by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Fish our lake for crappie, perch, catfish or bass. The park has three fishing piers and a boat ramp. We also loan fishing rods, reels and tackle boxes as part of TPWD’s Tackle Loaner Program. Remember, you do not need a fishing license to fish from shore in a state park! You can rent a boat here or bring your own. We allow motors, but have a 5 mph speed limit.
