Topic: Bike Carrier on R 179 Posted: 13 Jan 2015 at 7:49am |
Has anyone had any experience with using a bike rack on the R-179?
I have read where some other podders experienced sway when towing their pod with bikes on the bike rack. The 179 has the kitchen in the rear so there is already additional weight there. I am concerned about the extra weight of the bike carrier & two bikes.

Will you be relocating the spare tire or leaving it in place? I carry two bikes, however, I now carry the POD tire in the back of my truck. The switch is basically a wash and the load is still balanced. I would not recommend loading the rear POD receiver with the spare tire AND the bikes.

Another vote for the Swagman. Mine's a 64664 and slipped right over my Reese WDH.

Fwunder, does this setup block access through the rear hatch of the TV?

Yes, but the 4Runner has a slide down window so it has not been an issue for me. That and some well planned packing.

Fred,
Right 64664. I got the idea from one of your posts, thanks. I had to use the longer ball mount because I have two propane tanks and an electric tongue jack. Works great. Gary

A tongue-mounted bike rack may also be an option... here's one from eTrailer (but there are several other models available elsewhere)

I thought about that idea too, Outbound. The downsides I saw to that was:
1) Added tongue weight. 2) Can't just unhook Pod and take Bikes to trail w/TV which we have done often. Fred
