I have been researching various brands of composting toilets, and was hoping someone on the list has already gone this route with lessons learned.
I have been looking at the Nature's Head and Air Head self contained models since they are very similar in features and price. My intention is that since I have never used (or plan on using) the black tank, to seal the opening, board the area, and place the composter on top. Most come with a tiny 12v computer fan that runs constantly and expels the odors (if any) outside. It also seems (by what I have read) that the odors are only created when solids and liquids are combined, so the composter has separate compartments for each and they never meet. Very clever. The solids are kept in a peat-moss filled section and eventually dry-up only needing the replace the moss every few weeks depending on the number of people using the john. Liquids are kept in a pull out canister and can be dumped daily. One last thing, I also read another post where you can buy a twist on waste valve, and then combine your black and gray holding tanks therefore increasing your storage capacity of gray water. |

Sounds interesting. And me knowing nothing about this I have to ask, do you just take it home and add it to a compost heap there or what?
Would it be hard to get to these compartments under the Pod to dump and clean them?

As far as I understand it, you simply take out the bin, and dump it into a bag and dispose as you would "cat litter"
Also, the compartments are part of the potty, and not under the Pod. Any old black tank opening can be sealed since it is no longer needed. |

Have you thought of a cassette toilet?
They are "the way it is" in Europe for "RVers"... Just like the tank system we use on this side of the pond, they have their good, and bad sides. All of the caravans I messed with in Europe had a permanent installation, and the "cassette" came out through the side of the coach. Just out of curiosity, what is the matter with the system on the pod already? |
