I like your idea and will consider it. I tow with a pickup truck. I learned all I have to do just before hitching is to park my truck sideways to the slide. Then I climb in the bed and look at the top of the slide.
So far nothing has been there, but I have a short ladder and long broom to clear the top of the slide if anything appears.

We camp in Northern California campgrounds for the most part.  The pine trees drop needles and pitch onto the trailer.  After spending an hour cleaning the slide roof after a trip I wanted something to protect the slide but awnings seem way too expensive.  Also the pads are narrow; I have yet to be in a place where I could pull up beside the trailer.
