Topic: Slide out Posted: 21 Sep 2014 at 10:13pm |
We camp in Northern California campgrounds for the most part. The pine trees drop needles and pitch onto the trailer. After spending an hour cleaning the slide roof after a trip I wanted something to protect the slide but awnings seem way too expensive. Also the pads are narrow; I have yet to be in a place where I could pull up beside the trailer.

I like your idea and will consider it. I tow with a pickup truck. I learned all I have to do just before hitching is to park my truck sideways to the slide. Then I climb in the bed and look at the top of the slide. So far nothing has been there, but I have a short ladder and long broom to clear the top of the slide if anything appears. Gar

I bought a section of vinyl carpet protector and cut it to the width of the slide top. I roll this out when the slide is opened and pull it off just before closing. I find a 3 step stool gives me all the height I need to reach the slide top.

We carry a 3 fold step ladder as well and I wipe it down. Fortunately I'm tall enough with the help of the ladder to be able to see and make sure it's clean. A step ladder should def do the trick for you. Be safe out there.

I get by with a short 2ft aluminum stepladder. It comes in handy for other things like starting my home-made awning in the rail on the other side....

We price one of the awnings at our dealership and they start around $230 and go up to $400 plus installation.

The best solution is to add the retractable awning over the slide. Search this forum for a thread on this subject. It keeps dirt, rain, snow, ice and sun off the slide. Any qualified RV shop should be able to make the mod if you don't want to yourself.
