Budward really got my interest going when he mentioned the Torque App/OBD2 link. Torque is Android specific so I found Engine Link for iPhone and bought an OBD2 Scanner for a total of $30.

Seems to work very well (for what I know) in both 4Runner and Subaru Forrester. The scanner easily plugs into both vehicles.

Pictured below is a screen shot of one of the many screens with some custom readouts I configured. Parked, of course.

My question concerns Transmission Pan temp. The picture below is driving around (country) town for an hour or so with ambient temp about 75. From what I understand those numbers are right within spec for an '08 4Runner. My understanding is that I should get concerned if Transmission Temp rises above 240 when towing and that transmission fluid is pretty much destroyed above 300.

Does that make sense? Although I didn't have this on our latest big podyssey, it's prolly a good thing as this is more distracting than texting and driving! Wink

Thanks.

Edited to add following link which seems well written and answers the question:

If you can get it to show you oil temps, that one is pretty vital.  Your tranny temp and coolant temp look normal for daily driving.  You'll see an oil temp about 10 degrees higher than coolant, usually about 200-205, until you start towing.

Thanks Doug. The formula I have for oil temp doesn't seem to be working for the 4Runner:

015C,Engine oil temperature,-40,419,°F,(A - 40)*9/5 + 32,0

Budward, you got a working formula?

Thanks!

From what I've read the 4.0L 1GR-FE Toyota has no oil temp sensor Unhappy
I hope that is wrong, because I'd like to see it too!

Spent way too much time searching the forums. Closest thing I could find was in Toyota GT86 forums. Figured I'd try it:

2101,Oil temperature t1,-40,215,°C,AC-40,0
2101,Oil temperature t2,-40,215,°F,(A - 40)*9/5 + 32,0

Interesting that PID 2101 does reflect data. Just not the right data. Both formula spit back -40. Didn't try running with it to see if number changes. I doubt it.

I think I did read that the late model FJCs don't report oil temp. Still trying to figure if 08 4runner 4.0 does.

Interesting side is how MPG is calculated in Engine Link:

MPG = (14.7 * 6.17 * 454 * VSS * 0.621371) / (3600 * MAF / 100)
MPG = 710.7 * VSS / MAF

MPG - miles per gallon
14.7 grams of air to 1 gram of gasoline - ideal air/fuel ratio
6.17 pounds per gallon - density of gasoline
4.54 grams per pound - conversion
VSS - vehicle speed in kilometers per hour
0.621371 miles per hour/kilometers per hour - conversion
3600 seconds per hour - conversion
MAF - mass air flow rate in 100 grams per second
100 - to correct MAF to give grams per second

Prolly would be a lot easier if manufacturers would give access to all the sensors and PIDs and you could just measure injector flow rate.

What about adjusting the oil formula so it starts out closer to ambient, then see if it rises up to about 200 F?  It will take much longer than the coolant temp to come up to full temp, maybe 20-30 minutes.

FWIW my 2013 Tacoma 4.0L V6 has the same  1GR-FE engine code and it does report both T1 and T2 transmission temperature codes. The ScanGauge reads both. The codes for the ScanGauge are a different format so I can't help there, but the data is there and it must come from the transmission via the on-board computer. The Tacoma dashboard also has an AT over-temp idiot light but who knows what it's set for.

Charlie, transmission temps are pretty easy in 4th and 5th gen 4.0Ls. It seems the engine oil temp/pressure either have secret sensors or no sensors.
