Budward really got my interest going when he mentioned the Torque App/OBD2 link. Torque is Android specific so I found Engine Link for iPhone and bought an OBD2 Scanner for a total of $30.

Seems to work very well (for what I know) in both 4Runner and Subaru Forrester. The scanner easily plugs into both vehicles.

Pictured below is a screen shot of one of the many screens with some custom readouts I configured. Parked, of course.

My question concerns Transmission Pan temp. The picture below is driving around (country) town for an hour or so with ambient temp about 75. From what I understand those numbers are right within spec for an '08 4Runner. My understanding is that I should get concerned if Transmission Temp rises above 240 when towing and that transmission fluid is pretty much destroyed above 300.

Does that make sense? Although I didn't have this on our latest big podyssey, it's prolly a good thing as this is more distracting than texting and driving! Wink

Thanks.

Edited to add following link which seems well written and answers the question:
