We are headed out the last week of April to Silver River State Park, which is just outside, (east), of Ocala,
Florida.

The reason I post this ahead of our stay is because of the unprecedented situation underway by the State
to recover control of Silver Springs amusement park, (the source of the Silver River), which has been
operated by a private contractor for many, many years.  The present operator has
offered the State some $4 million to "buy out" the remaining years of their contract-  money the State
plans to use to de-commercialize the property.

Silver Springs and Silver River will then be merged into a huge, environmentally significant holding of the
Florida State Park System, a mere hour or so from our home.

We are very excited at the potential, and want to see the "before" so that we may evaluate the "after".

We'll keep you posted!

The time has almost come to be off for four nights to Silver River State Park.

We went out to the "barn" this evening after supper, hooked up the 'Pod, trailered it into town and parked
it next to the house.  Tomorrow morning we will leisurely load everything up, round up the Cocker Spaniels
and shoot for a 10:30 or so departure.  Checking the Florida State Park Reservation System, there is no one
due to occupy our reserved site this evening, so experience tells is that we will be allowed in upon arrival.

We should be in place, set up including the R-Dome, and ready to chill out about 2:00.

We have begun a "tradition" of ordering in for the first night in camp.  As we approach the Park we'll scope
out a Chinese or a Mexican joint and make that the first supper.  After that, grill, grill, grill!  (Including
steak, baked potatoes, asparagus and birthday cake Friday night.  (Watch the Forum "Birthdays" post
to see how old I have managed to become!)

Man, it's only been a month since we last got out, but it feels like forever!  Can't wait.....

Love the idea of some Mexican or Chinese in-camp.

We usually stop at a KFC for our first night of camping..  Who said you had to eat healthy when camping... try for fish of next night to counteract the KFC... lol

Sent from the R-Dome:

Silver River State Park is absolutely beautiful!  We arrived about 11:30 on Tuesday, got all set up, and
have been enjoying perfect weather ever since.  Mid- to low-50's overnight, and upper 80's in the
afternoon.

Campsites are very spacious and private with the vast majority being pull-throughs.  We have a nice little
back-in which we negotiated perfectly on the first attempt.  Next visit we might just reserve s pull-through
Just because we've never had one before!

I hiked to the Silver River yesterday, about a mile, where canoe rentals are available.  You may bring
your own canoe or kayak as long as you're willing to drag it to the River-  (Uh, no thanks...)

All in all a great break from work, and I get to eat birthday cake in the woods.....  Doesn't get much
better than that!

Congrats on surviving another year!  From what I have read the area will be returned to its natural state while remaining a state park with camping.  They will do away with a lot of non-native plants etc.  It is a great place for sure!

Terry-  Silver River State Park has always been maintained as a pristine example of
Florida fauna.  It is the theme park, Silver Springs that is in the process of
being de-commercialized by the State.

Thanks to Tech and Terry for the b'day wishes.
